In Seafood Watch Sustainability Series (Vol. 4), we examine how certain forage species play an outsized role in ecosystem functioning and species survival — earning them the designation of key forage species. Forage species aren’t just economically valuable — they are an essential food source for larger predators, keeping entire ecosystems in balance. However, overfishing these species can trigger cascading effects, disrupting food webs and threatening biodiversity. Using three data-driven indices, we assess their importance within food webs and determine which species are key. Read the white paper: https://lnkd.in/eJrHqqUt.

Transforming seafood production to advance environmental sustainability and equitable treatment for fishers and farmers.
关于我们
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program helps transform seafood production around the world in ways that advance environmental sustainability and promote equitable treatment for people who catch and farm our seafood. Our assessments rate how fisheries and aquaculture operations perform against science-based standards for environmental sustainability. These ratings underpin our sustainability recommendations for wild-caught and farmed seafood. Our international work with producers ranges from developing new technologies for assessing small-scale shrimp farms in Vietnam to studying the impacts of antibiotics in aquaculture in Chile. We also work to help ensure environmentally sustainable seafood comes from farms and fisheries that provide decent working conditions and respect the human rights of seafood workers through a social responsibility lens. We collaborate with business partners, chefs, and culinarians to promote sustainable seafood and advance ocean conservation. We also work with zoos and aquariums across North America to help educate the public about sustainable seafood through our conservation partners program and work with governments to inform and drive policy change.

California may be home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but our initiatives span across the globe. Over 7,500 miles away from the Aquarium, you can find a remarkable woman named Thuy. Thuy is one of our valued global fellows based in Vietnam, and she’s making big waves in the world of aquaculture and conservation as a senior research associate creating a more sustainable future for small-scale shrimp farmers and the environment. Thuy's work is at the heart of a critical issue — balancing the growing global demand for shrimp with the need for responsible and environmentally sound farming practices. She bridges the gap between small-scale shrimp farmers, who often face economic and technical challenges, and industry leaders, fostering collaboration and driving positive change within the sector. Thuy’s dedication and innovation exemplify the spirit of Women's History Month, highlighting the vital role women play in science, conservation, and sustainable development. #WomensHistoryMonth #SustainableSeafood #FintasticWomen
