Can AI chatbots be relied on for medical diagnosis? Not fully. At least, not yet. Can they still be helpful? Certainly. Here’s what AI chatbots are great at: 1?. Collecting symptom data. 2?. Assessing symptom severity and risks. 3?. Connecting users to healthcare providers via telehealth platforms. Now, should startups ?? build proprietary algorithms or use ?? ready-made platforms? Creating an AI model for diagnostics from scratch (even if it’s designed just to do a preliminary risk assessment) is a massive undertaking— requiring years of development, training, and clinical trials. In contrast, opting for pre-trained models will make the development process faster and more cost-effective. Moreover, ready-made models are often designed to be compliant with HIPAA, HITRUST, and other industry regulations. Our team has recently developed a HIPAA-compliant AI chatbot PoC for a client using one of these platforms, Microsoft’s Azure Health Bot. Based on the reported symptoms, it provides actionable advice— such as whether the patient should monitor symptoms, seek emergency care, or schedule a doctor’s appointment via platforms like Teladoc or Amwell. ?? Biggest challenge for such bots? Understanding subjective inputs like "upset stomach" or "sharp pain." For clinicians, the more precise––the better. To increase accuracy, I recommend using pre-built response options and contextual follow-up questions. For example: ? A patient reports a migraine. ? The bot responds: When did it start? Does it vary throughout the day? Rate the severity from 1 to 10 (use this comparative scale). To sum up, chatbots can’t (and shouldn’t) replace a healthcare professional, but they can guide a patient to the right one. Curious what else they can do?
