  • After cyclist and fitness buff Rob Dollar was killed by a motorist in 2017 while riding on South Mountain, his father, John, created a foundation dedicated to making streets safer for bikers. The Rob Dollar Foundation is collaborating with software engineering faculty members and students in #SCAI to create a “dash cam” for bikes. When a car comes too close to a cyclist, ?????????????????? activates and records information about the encounter, capturing data as well as images of the vehicle and its license plate. Software engineering students working under the supervision of Robert Heinrichs, a Fulton Schools associate teaching professor of computer science and engineering have created a mobile application that works with the device while a team at the University of Arizona has developed the hardware. The device can collect data that could be presented to lawmakers to stimulate conversation about better road safety. “We want to save lives,” John Dollar says. “If we can save even one life, our mission will be a success.” ?? • Wow! ?? ???????? ?? ????????! Over on the Polytechnic campus, the SCAI advising team hosted a fun, festive, fall celebration for students to relax and recharge as they prepare for final exams and the end of the semester. Our ASU Software Engineering students had a great time sipping hot cocoa and grabbing sweet treats. At our #PhD Coffee Hour, doctoral students met Celeste Fralick, Ph.D. and got to learn about her storied technology career in biomedical engineering and cybersecurity. Dr. Fralick, once named one of the "Top 50 Women in Technology" by Forbes magazine, was inducted into the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University Hall of Fame on Friday for her achievements. The students enjoyed hearing about her experiences as chief data scientist and senior principal engineer for McAfee. Over in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at ASU, the INFORMS student chapter met to discuss their future plans. Club president Varun Srivastava told attendees that the group is a great way for students to build their professional networks. Meanwhile, the new ASEM - American Society for Engineering Management student chapter gathered for the first time to chat about ways to bridge the gap between engineering and industrial management. Thanks so much to all our amazing students, faculty and staff who made these activities such a success!

  • Every bot has its day ?? After a four-year hiatus, an interdisciplinary team at Arizona State University has revived the ?????????????????? ???????????????? ??????????????????, bringing back an event that was once a mainstay for southwestern academics and industry professionals. More than 600 people registered for the conference that took place earlier this month on ASU’s Tempe campus. Hamid Marvi, an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, served as the event’s co-general chair. “Over the course of two days, we featured an exceptional lineup of invited talks, faculty presentations, student lightning talks, poster sessions and robot demonstrations,” Marvi says. “This event highlighted ASU’s leadership in robotics research and fostered meaningful connections with leaders in the field.” Nakul Gopalan, an assistant professor of computer science in #SCAI and fellow co-general chair of the symposium says it’s crucial to foster a sense of community. “Events like these are important for researchers because they create opportunities to explore collaborations that can lead to real advancements,” Gopalan says. #SWRS2024 ?? Professor Andrea Richa in #SCAI has worked as part of a cross-disciplinary, inter-university team to explore how the new field of stochastic thermodynamics might be used to reconsider the constraints of 20th-century analyses of computation. The resulting paper, “???? ???????????????????? ???????????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???? ?????????????????????????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????????????????" has been published in the November 5th edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America PNAS. “I think our initial goal was to create an understanding of how energy plays a role together with other parameters that are important in computer science, like time, space, etc. How do you integrate those things to create a bridge between computer science and statistical physics?” Richa says. The work evolved from discussions between the 19 researchers that took place at a workshop held at the Santa Fe Institute in 2022. ?? Read the paper: https://lnkd.in/gnn7HkUh ??
