??Check out our new report! ?? The EU must decarbonise shipping and aviation – but at what cost to biodiversity? ?? Our latest research shows that if the EU aims to fulfil its shipping and aviation climate targets using #biofuels, it will completely undermine its biodiversity goals by 2050. E-fuels, produced with #GreenHydrogen and renewable electricity, are the only alternative fuels compatible with EU biodiversity goals in 2050. Furthermore, they are the alternative fuel with the highest emissions reduction potential. Our findings: ?? Biofuel-heavy fuel mixes, particularly those from biomass crops, pose high risks to biodiversity due to their extensive land use demands.? ?? Pursuing aviation and maritime decarbonisation goals using biofuels jeopardises 2050 EU biodiversity targets. ?? Of the fuels modelled only green hydrogen-derived e-fuels are compatible with biodiversity targets. Biodiversity impacts from the ‘high e-fuel’ scenario modelled are largely due to the inclusion of biofuels in this fuel mix. What does this mean for EU policy? ???? The EU does not have to choose between climate and biodiversity. To protect our nature while decarbonising aviation, EU policymakers must: ?? Invest in e-fuel production which currently lacks finances and market certainty. ?? Reduce fuel demand to ease already immense pressures on biodiversity posed by production to meet existing demand. Whether we like it or not, biofuels will continue to be used in fuel mixes despite their biodiversity impact. To protect biodiversity as long as these fuels are used, the EU must: ?? Recognise and prioritise the value of using land for preserving biodiversity. ??? Monitor soil health to ensure biofuel production doesn’t reduce soils’ capacity as carbon sinks. ???? Promote biodiversity in agricultural practice. "What can we do to minimise the risk that biofuels present to nature? In short, minimise the use of biofuels," says our Policy Officer Nuala Doyle in this article for Sustainable Aviation Futures. "Aviation must learn from the issues that the road transport sector has identified in the use of biofuels, and go further than just placing sustainability considerations on feedstocks in order to incentivise the use of e-fuels, which do not come with the same biodiversity risks, over biofuels." ?? The race to develop alternative aviation fuels is accelerating, but are we considering all the implications? We partnered with Climate Catalyst to explore critical considerations that are often overlooked in the transition to a greener, more sustainable aviation industry, globally. These include: 1?? Environmental justice - alternative aviation fuels will see a rise in demand for land, water and renewable energy. But are we fully considering the biodiversity implications of this rising demand? 2?? Social equity - in a world where only 1% of the population generates close to 50% of emissions from flying, do the solutions on the table account for this disparity in access to air travel? 3?? A just transition? - are workers and impacted communities being brought into the conversation? And are the costs and benefits of the transition hitting different stakeholders disproportionately? This analysis dives deep into all these questions and more. Explore the briefing, along with key recommendations for embedding these critical issues.? ?? https://lnkd.in/eahTNpAs

As #COP29 ends, we’re reflecting on our highlights at this year’s conference. Here’s our Senior Director, Emma Fenton, setting the global context for decarbonisation in the aviation section. In their presentation, they highlight the need for both a global regulatory framework in the aviation sector and a shift to e-fuels using green hydrogen. “We have at our disposal, the tools to rapidly and equitably decarbonise the aviation sector, as long as we have the foresight to use them,” they say. “The true green fuels are e-fuels using green hydrogen – and our global future fuel mix has to be driven by a shift to hydrogen and its derivatives to minimise climate and other environmental impacts.” ??? ?????? ?????? ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ???????????????????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ???? ????? A new report by the SASHA Coalition, warns that using biofuels to decarbonize EU aviation and shipping poses serious risks to biodiversity. Having PhD degree in Conservational Biology, I’m especially drawn to work that brings together biodiversity and climate goals, which are not always strictly aligned. Kudos to Aoife O'Leary and Cerulogy for this excellent research! I look forward to seeing more research like this in the near future. Key findings include: ? Biofuel production poses significant risks to biodiversity, both directly and indirectly. ? E-fuels provide the highest emissions reduction potential while minimising biodiversity impacts. ? Cross-sectoral, integrated approaches are essential for truly sustainable decarbonisation. #NatureAndBiodiversityDay at #COP29
New biodiversity report! The EU must decarbonise shipping and aviation – but at what cost to biodiversity? Our latest research launches today on #COP29’s Nature & Biodiversity Day. It shows that, if biofuels are used to fulfil the EU’s shipping and aviation climate targets, its 2050 nature preservation targets could be completely undermined. The solution? Green hydrogen e-fuels: they put less pressure on biodiversity and are less emissions-intensive than biofuels. Watch our video below to learn more, and find the full report here: https://lnkd.in/euV6PGe9 Arcadia eFuels | Cathryn Estes | Cerulogy #Biodiversity #Nature #Shipping #Aviation #Decarbonisation

?? Last week's #COP29 Hydrogen Declaration made some good gestures to a progressive hydrogen approach, but still leaves the door open to irresponsible production and use that would slow rather than drive the green transition. While the declaration does promote renewable hydrogen, it still permits "low-carbon" blue hydrogen, made burning natural gas with carbon capture and that causes high methane leakage levels. Investing in non-solutions like blue hydrogen risks sinking funds in what will ultimately become stranded assets when fossil fuels are eventually phased out. The green hydrogen we have must go to the right sectors. While the declaration recognises green H2's role in decarbonising hard-to-abate industries, we need stronger assurances that it will be exclusively used where there are no other decarbonisation options. Green hydrogen production is expensive and energy intensive, and using it in electrifiable sectors (such as road transport or residential heating) constitutes a misuse of the resources we have, and a step back for the energy transition. https://lnkd.in/ex3369aT #GreenHydrogen #Hydrogen #Shipping #Aviation #HydrogenDeclaration
