In today’s rapidly evolving world, digital and AI skills are no longer a luxury but essential for survival and success. The global economy is shifting towards technology, automation, and artificial intelligence, leaving those without the right skills at a disadvantage. Sadly, many children in Nigeria, especially in underserved communities, are being left behind in this digital revolution. Rubies Tech Foundation, we see this gap as an opportunity; an opportunity to empower the next generation of leaders and innovators. Over the past seven years, we’ve trained over 4,000 children across Nigeria in cutting-edge digital and technological skills, giving them the tools they need to compete and thrive in a technology-driven world. Now, we are looking to expand our impact by seeking a partnership with the Oyo State Government and other key stakeholders to train 100 to 200 students aged 13 to 19 from public schools within Ibadan, Oyo State. Through this program, we aim to equip young minds with essential digital skills in Python programming and AI fundamentals that will open doors to new career opportunities and drive long-term economic growth. But this is more than just coding. It’s about empowerment. It’s about giving these students the confidence to create, innovate, and solve problems using technology. The impact goes beyond the classroom; it means equipping Oyo State’s future workforce with the skills needed to build tech solutions, start businesses, and drive innovation from within. Imagine a generation of young people who are not just tech consumers but tech creators; young minds who will shape industries, solve community challenges, and position Oyo State as a hub for technological excellence. That’s the future we’re building at Rubies Tech Foundation. To make this a reality, we need the support of the government and stakeholders in education. It’s a good day to flashback to a couple of weeks ago when 21 amazing teenage girls graduated from the RubiesTech Foundation Girls Tech Bootcamp! ?????? Over the course of 6 months, these teenagers went from having no idea what coding was to building incredible projects like: - An expense tracker ?? - An embedded system with a search engine for an online supermarket ?? - An ATM simulator ?? - Creative games ?? - And the highlight for me…a robot they built ?? (mind-blowing stuff!) and many more Led by the founder of RubiesTech Foundation, Temiloluwa Ruth Afape, this program didn’t just teach tech skills; it also built confidence in these girls. One of them even stepped out of her shell to rap in public for the first time ??—and she wasn’t bad at all (stay tuned for that clip another day!). As a proud Board of Trustees member, seeing these young tech leaders shine was such an inspiring moment. It's our 7th and final feature of 2024! ??It's been fun sharing the fantastic stories of 7 Amazing Africans this year. Right here is the icing on the cake ?? A couple of weeks back, I enjoyed listening to Temiloluwa’s story. Her story is filled with many interesting testimonies, and this is just one of them?? "A guy whose school we visited in 2017 reached out to me. He was in SS1 or SS2 at the time. He is currently into animations. He is done with his undergraduate degree. He is even married. He told me that I helped him discover his purpose in life. I taught them Scratch. He said that class informed his decision to go into animations and video editing." Temiloluwa excitedly recounted during our interview.
