Filtration of indoor air with portable air filters reduces particle concentrations indoors, which is expected to have health benefits for building occupants ?? In this work by Richard Corsi and colleagues at the University of California, Davis titled ‘Longevity of size-dependent particle removal performance of do-it-yourself box fan air filters’, filtration performance of do-it-yourself (DIY) box fan filters deployed across a university campus was assessed over an academic year ?? Importantly this research provides insight into the ability of low-cost DIY air filters to improve the indoor environment by reducing particle concentrations and related human exposure. The study of the long term and size-dependent performance allows for the analysis of how DIY air filters will perform with regards to particles generated by different sources (e.g. wildfire smoke vs. respiratory aerosols). New paper freshly published on the Royal Society of Chemistry Environmental Science: Atmospheres journal: "Metal speciation of volcanic aerosols from Mt. Etna at varying aerosol water content and pH obtained by different thermodynamic models". These results trace back to the crater sampling measurements during the EPL-REFLECT campaign funded by the European Commission H2020 EUROVOLC project. It is open access, download it here --> https://lnkd.in/ehR2XM5U ...and incidentally my first paper as coauthor of my old friend Chiara Giorio! We also got the Environmental Science: Atmospheres cover (picture in this post)! Isn't it nice? We had the pleasure of interviewing #ESPI Emerging Investigator Dr Zhenyu Tian from the Northeastern University College of Science. ? Zhenyu’s article titled “In-depth chemical profiling of tire and artificial turf crumb rubber: aging, transformation products and transport pathways” focuses on the chemical profiling of crumb rubber in tire and artificial turf at different ages. ? ?? Read the #OpenAccess paper at https://lnkd.in/ep3RrKQw ? In his recent interview, Dr Tian shares insights into his research evolution, his enjoyment of working with students and motivations for answering new questions about organic contaminants. He is particularly intrigued by the question “What contaminants have the most significant impact under real environmental conditions?” ? Zhenyu shares his experience of developing a career as a scientist - " I see myself/my career as an experiment. We make hypotheses and we put in effort that we think are correct and then see if it all works. If not, we acknowledge it’s a negative result. If someday I am not working as a scientist, that means my experiment didn’t end up working." ? ?? Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/e6NDf2GM

Explore the article behind the front cover of the latest issue of Environmental Science: Atmospheres ?? - Impact of atmospheric water-soluble iron on α-pinene-derived SOA formation and transformation in the presence of aqueous droplets – from Sabine Lüchtrath and colleagues at the Technische Universit?t Berlin and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 ?? Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) have a strong impact on the Earth's radiation budget and yet many SOA formation pathways in the atmospheric multiphase system have not been fully explored. In particular, iron as the most abundant transition metal of the Earth crust is capable of transforming organic compounds in the aqueous phase in photo- and redox reactions. In this study the authors investigated the influence of ferrous iron in the aqueous phase on α-pinene SOA. Using flow reactor experiments, they found increased SOA formation from α-pinene ozonolysis in the presence of acidic iron-containing droplets, underlining the strong influence of pH and iron chemistry on SOA formation in multiphase systems! Explore our latest Review article in Environmental Science: Atmospheres ?? titled “Microplastics in Asia: overcoming sampling, analysis, and regulatory challenges to protect the ecosystem – a review” – from Srinivas Srimath & colleagues at Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Anna University and RSK Environment Ltd. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic particles <5 mm in size and constitute a major class of environmental pollutants due to their relevance to human health and the economy. The challenges to sampling and analysing these compounds in Asia are exacerbated by uneven distribution, lack of standardised methods and contamination risks. This review examines the current knowledge of the obstacles in sampling and analysing MPs and an outline of the regulations in different Asian countries with different characterization methods to analyse the MPs.
