In recent weeks, CERP editors have been at the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education #BCCE2024 and the 27th International Conference on Chemistry Education (ICCE 2024). CERP editor, Scott Lewis from the University of South Florida spoke at #BCCE2024, at the University of Kentucky, US. He says it was ‘a great opportunity to share chemistry teaching practices and education research innovations’ and echoes CERP’s excitement at supporting and participating in the conference. Meanwhile, associate editor Mageswary Karpudewan from Universiti Sains Malaysia was at ICCE 2024 in Pattaya, Bangkok. ‘I have attended and delivered invited talks at previous ICCE conferences,’ she says, ‘but ICCE 2024 was particularly impressive and informative. A huge thank you to Amy Cannon and David A Laviska for inviting me to co-organize the day-long symposium on green and sustainable chemistry in the chemistry curriculum. A massive thanks to Professor Supawan and her team for organizing such an amazing conference and for inviting me to deliver a on ethics and policy in chemistry education.’? #greenchemistry #chemed #chemistryeducation

Practical chemistry activities are an essential part of an inspiring, engaging and relevant chemistry education. However, our research has found that teachers are facing many barriers which are hampering their efforts to run practical chemistry activities within the science classroom: - Insufficient time for practical work to be taught alongside theory (60%) - Challenging student behaviour (51%) - Cost of consumables and chemicals (37%) and a lack of equipment (35%) - Having no time for training or practising (31%) - Understaffing of science technicians (27%) Read our opinion piece to find out more about what the Royal Society of Chemistry are doing to tackle these issues.
