Over the last five months, I have never experienced more professional joy. The joy was not a result of my personal accomplishments on the campaign, but instead had everything to do with building a beautiful community. It was an absolute joy listening to countless voters, meeting with local candidates, engaging with community leaders, reviewing strategies, working with our political team, organizing canvass launches, and most importantly working towards a common cause and North Star that was bigger than any one person. The statistics on health inequity among marginalized communities are as stark and persistent as gaps in education, earnings and access to funding. They grow from the same tree — longstanding structural and systemic inequities rooted in racism and discrimination. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines health disparities as, “preventable differences in the burden, disease, injury, violence, or in opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by socially disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and other population groups and communities.” These disparities can be due to less access to care, quality of care, affordability and differences in health insurance coverage. “Health inequities exist. In the US, there are large disparities in the prevalence of heart disease among Black communities compared to white. There are also major differences in maternal and fetal health between these two communities. In the UK, Covid contributed to widening inequalities in life expectancy, while ethnic minority groups were disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Employers have a key role to play in closing these gaps and in making sure that access to healthcare is not dependent on factors outside of the control of individuals.
