Improving air quality could SIGNIFICANTLY improve respiratory health. Over 80% of India's population and over 60% of Saudi Arabia's population are exposed to dangerous levels of particulate matter. Exposure to biomass smoke is notably high in India (45%), China (35%), and Brasil (20%). Indoor air quality remains a significant issue, with one-fifth to one-quarter of some populations reporting poor conditions. There is a strong correlation (R = -0.84) between particulate matter exposure and COPD severity. Addressing air quality is more than? an environmental issue; it is a pressing public health challenge that demands immediate action. Governments, organisations, and individuals all have a role to play in advocating for cleaner energy, improved housing, and stricter policies to reduce outdoor and indoor air pollution. ?? Each day, we take 23,000 breaths, while millions struggle for breath. Respiratory diseases remain the third leading cause of death globally,? but this doesn't have to be our common future. Like generations before us who tackled polio and malaria, we have an opportunity to transform the state of respiratory health globally. COPD is largely preventable and, with early diagnosis and proper care, patients are able to manage their symptoms and live fuller lives. The solution starts with ???????????? ????????, leading to targeted national action plans that address both root causes and access to better care. Let's be the generation that turns the tide on respiratory disease, giving a voice back to those who suffer in silence. Let’s be the generation that champions change in the respiratory area,? just like past generations did for Polio and Malaria sufferers. It is entirely possible. ?? According to a seminal article just published in ?????????????? ???????? in The Lancet Group, global NCD targets are being MASSIVELY MISSED. After a decade of global efforts, working with an agreed ????% target, the improvement in preventing early deaths from major NCDs is just ??.??%! ?? Yes, you read that right - ONE POINT FIVE PERCENT. These diseases are responsible for 80% of all years lived with disability before the age of 70! The 4th Global NCD Alliance Forum took place in Kigali, Rwanda. It united over 700 advocates, experts, and ministerial representatives from 66 countries to address the escalating challenge of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). A significant focus of the Forum was on respiratory diseases, which constitute a major segment of the NCD burden. Rwanda, the host nation, showcased pioneering initiatives that have markedly influenced health outcomes: Enhanced Healthcare Accessibility: In under four years, Rwanda has established 1,280 new health posts, significantly reducing the average travel time to health facilities by half, thereby improving access to care for respiratory and other NCD patients. Commitment to Universal Health Coverage: With 92% of the population now covered under Community-Based Health Insurance, recent reforms have reduced the costs of advanced medical procedures, such as CT brain scans, by up to 64%, making essential diagnostics more affordable. Digital Health Innovations: The introduction of Rwanda's DHIS2 NCD tracker tool has propelled screening rates from 30% to an impressive 91% within two years, facilitating early detection and intervention for conditions including chronic respiratory diseases. These initiatives exemplify how innovative policies and data-driven digital solutions can effectively address the growing NCD crisis in Africa and beyond. Nearly half of the public - 45% - remain completely unaware that COPD is a lung disease, despite it being the third leading cause of death worldwide. Listen to Tonya Winders, President of the Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform explain why data-driven insights are vital to advancing the fight against respiratory diseases. Representing over 60 patient organisations globally, Tonya champions a future where proactive, evidence-based tools and approaches pave the way to better lung health. In this century, we have an extraordinary opportunity to make lung health a cornerstone of every new policy decision around the world.? We can fight our most devastating diseases while also cleaning up the air we all breathe. It’s time to prioritise a data-driven approach that can significantly reduce the burden of respiratory diseases while also creating a cleaner, healthier environment for all. ?? The 2025 global NCD Alliance Forum in Rwanda starts today! https://lnkd.in/eVTMezE3 NCDs are set to cause 51% of all premature mortality by 2030, but Rwanda is pioneering solutions that are set to change these trajectories: 1?? Digital Health Tools: Rwanda’s new DHIS2 NCD tracker tool has already increased screening rates from 30% to 91% in just two years, revolutionising early detection and treatment. This can become a blueprint for other nations. 2?? Healthcare Access Transformation: 1,280 new health posts has been established in less than 4 years, bringing care to underserved communities and cutting average travel time to health facilities by half 3?? Universal Coverage Push: Community-Based Health Insurance now covers 92% of the population, with recent reforms slashing costs of advanced procedures in the case of CT brain scans by up to 64% These fantastic initiatives show how innovative policy and data-driven digital solutions can tackle the growing NCD crisis in Africa and beyond. The key to tackling NCDs such as respiratory diseases is to learn from successful nations’ approach adopting practices that clearly reap positive results.
