As we officially enter the second half of #COP29, the past week of insightful conversations with climate leaders have highlighted a few core themes that underscore both the public and private sector. Here are my three key takeaways: ??Insurability is a prominent factor of all climate transition plans. - Across every panel or conversation I had last week, insurability was a constant theme. While certain industries have different technicalities, input from our industry acts as a litmus test for long-term project feasibility and resilience. To unlock both for-profit and humanitarian funding, we need to create a stronger understanding of the value of insurance. ??Recognizing the need for collaboration and c-suite “buy-in”. - On Thursday, the COP29 Business, Investment and Philanthropy Climate Platform convened over 1,000 leaders to discuss the role of the private sector in the climate transition. This session had an overwhelming acknowledgment that cross-sector partnerships are a nonnegotiable, but the scale of financing is still lacking. Insurance can’t take on the entirety of this risk, so public sector support and collaboration is still crucial to also take on some of the risk ??Insurers’ ability to understand complex risk fills a unique need to unlock the necessary scale of climate finance? - COP28 ended with a goal to triple renewables by 2030, but this cannot be achieved without commitment from the insurance industries. With KPMG I discussed that in order to achieve this clean energy capacity insurance can be the great enabler. The sentiment at #COP29 is that stakeholders are asking insurance to lean in and support the climate transition plans of organizations. Insurance is not just an observer—we have the data, capabilities, and roadmap to answer this call. ?
