A new sea lock, the Nieuwe Sluis, has opened at Terneuzen, the Netherlands, near the border with Belgium. Our robust coatings systems and cross-border capability delivered durable solutions for the project. With the demanding saltwater environment, the facility posed a unique coatings challenge, with technical requirements of corrosion protection and color stability. PPG was key in providing highly durable coating solutions to protect the lock. Our PPG SIGMADUR 550 topcoat, known for its exceptional color and gloss retention, and PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 coating designed for offshore splash zones, offered superior protection in the unique marine environment. We are proud to share the successful completion of another electrostatic application project at Gemak Shipyard in Turkey. PPG SIGMAGLIDE? 2390 fouling release coating was applied to the Sunbelt Spirit, one of Great American Lines’ vehicle carriers, using the innovative application method. With electrostatic application, charged paint droplets are attracted to the surface like a magnet, creating a uniform, super-smooth film layer and significantly reducing coating overspray and waste. This method also minimizes the need for masking the vessel and cleaning the dock after application, saving valuable time and costs. Combined with the low VOC emissions of PPG SIGMAGLIDE? 2390 coating, electrostatic application provides a cleaner operation and an improved work environment for applicators compared to airless spraying.
