?? Bottom Trawling: A Controversial and Unsustainable Practice ?? Bottom trawling—a fishing method dating back to the 1300s—has become a significant issue in modern times. While it accounts for 26% of global fish catches, its environmental and socio-economic impacts are severe. ?? This practice damages seabed ecosystems, reduces biodiversity, and even contributes to climate change by releasing stored carbon from the ocean floor. As highlighted in our latest article, recent efforts in Europe, including the Marine Action Plan and the bans in Greece and Sweden, signal a shift towards sustainable fishing. However, more collective action is needed. NGOs and movements like Oceana, Seas at Risk, and the Transform Bottom Trawling Coalition are advocating for a phase-out of this destructive practice. Let’s work together to ensure the future sustainability of our oceans! ?? ?? The carbon footprint of bottom-trawled seafood is among the highest of all foods. For one thing, bottom trawling burns fossil fuels to catch fish and other marine life, more than any other fishing method. ? ? And when trawl nets scrape the seabed, they disturb vast amounts of carbon, releasing plumes of carbon-rich sediment that can be viewed from space. Bottom trawling is accelerating global warming and ocean acidification and worsening the impacts of climate change.? ? Visit the link below, and join us in advocating for this destructive practice to be banned within designated protected areas. It's high time for world leaders to take a stand and put an end to bottom trawling immediately.? #BanBottomTrawling https://lnkd.in/dk7JRZ69

There’s an often overlooked environmental threat taking place along the ocean floor. The unchecked practice of bottom trawling, an industrial fishing method in which weighted nets are dragged across the seabed to haphazardly catch marine life, is rapidly wreaking havoc on our ocean and its inhabitants — and posing a serious threat to the climate.? ? The EU is one of the worst offenders. Europe is quietly allowing this destruction to take place in its “protected areas.” Bottom trawling is simply not sustainable, ethical, or right. We’re asking you to stand with us and demand that the EU ban bottom trawling in its protected areas before it’s too late. https://lnkd.in/gdS3D_S8
