For me, personally, out-of-school time involved youth sports and play. Get home from school, grab some neighborhood friends and meet at the park, playground, court or cul-de-sac (what better street hockey setting is there than a cul-de-sac?!). Some games were structured, some weren’t, but we (the kids) decided. Street lights came on, we went home, and repeated it the next day. Friendships were forged, life lessons were learned. I’ve been reflecting back on those times this week and couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. On Tuesday, Project Play Southeast Michigan teamed up with Michigan Afterschool Partnership, and numerous youth sports & youth development providers, to openly share challenges and explore new OPPORTUNITIES to better connect afterschool and youth sports. It was incredibly motivating to hear stories, be thought partners, get intentional and envision a Southeast Michigan where kids can get what they need to thrive! A big thank you to Tony Smith and Terry Whitfield for helping facilitate the conversation, Co.act Detroit for hosting, and MASP and the numerous community partners in the community doing the work! Looking forward to implementing strategies, and rallying resources, to help in areas such as #CoachTrainings and #SportSampling. #63x30 #MillionCoachesChallenge
