As product leaders, we strive to foster a culture of continuous learning and growth on our teams. However, simply providing learning resources is not enough. To truly motivate skill development, we must build in mechanisms that reinforce the learning process. Two impactful strategies are feedback loops and recognition. Feedback loops create visibility into progress, which motivates teams to apply their new knowledge. Schedule check-ins after training to discuss learnings and set goals for application. Recognition reinforces growth and gives a sense of progress. Consider badging programs that celebrate new skill achievements.? When these mechanisms are structured into the learning journey, teams feel inspired to push themselves rather than disengaged. As leaders, we shape an environment where people feed off progress. Curiosity becomes organic rather than forced. Skill development is not a one-and-done training to check off. It's an iterative process that requires nurturing. Thoughtful feedback loops and recognition help us encourage that process long-term. How do you motivate continuous growth on your teams? I'd love to hear what works for you.

Have you ever thought about the role of certainty in product design? It's a concept that often flies under the radar, but has a profound impact on user behavior and adoption. In my work helping organizations create digital products, I've seen firsthand how the human craving for certainty influences engagement and success. When users navigate complex systems, they seek clear, specific information to guide their actions. They want to know they're on the right path. This is where product teams have a critical opportunity. By designing experiences that provide clear guidance and predictable outcomes, we can boost users' comfort and confidence. We can make the software feel intuitive and empowering, rather than daunting and confusing. I love the concept of "time to value" - the speed at which users can realize the benefits of a product. When users feel certain about what actions to take and what results to expect, they engage more deeply and quickly. They spend less time wondering and more time doing. But certainty isn't just a nice-to-have. It's a fundamental human need. As product creators, it's our responsibility to recognize and fulfill this need. It's not about dumbing things down or over-simplifying. It's about designing with empathy and clarity. So next time you're mapping out a user journey or wireframing a new feature, ask yourself: How can we provide certainty here? How can we make the path forward clear and the outcomes predictable? Your users will thank you. Certainty may not be the flashiest principle in product design, but it's one of the most powerful. Embrace it and watch your engagement soar.

I've seen my fair share of feature factories masquerading as empowered environments. Aakash nails the subtle signs: PMs held accountable for outcomes they can't control, discovery work that's just a license to build, and the dreaded HiPPO (highest paid person's opinion) lurking in every product review. But it's the cultural cues that really hit home. The constant hand-offs, the re-orgs that feel like a game of musical chairs, and the mismatch between planning rigor and validation courage. The truth is, building great products takes more than just following the motions. It takes a genuine commitment to understanding user needs, a willingness to challenge assumptions, and the autonomy to make decisions based on evidence, not opinions.

Product Growth Newsletter and Podcast ?? | Helping PMs, product leaders, and aspiring PMs succeed

What are the (subtle) signs you (might) work in a feature factory? Sometimes, it’s dead-clear that you’re in a feature factory.? That's when you’re: 1. Handed solutions, not problems 2. Delivery-focused, with very little discovery work 3. HiPPO’s (highest paid person’s opinion) drive the roadmap But sometimes, you can sign up for an empowered environment. And then, 9 months later... You wake up and find yourself in a covert feature factory. It looks like this: 1. "Outcomes to rail on PMs only" ? PMs are held accountable for outcomes, but it’s window-dressing because outputs are dictated to them. 2. "Research as a license to build" ? The vast majority of discovery work is confirmatory, and very few HiPPO ideas are actually disregarded. 3. "HiPPO Control via Product Review" ? HiPPO’s inevitably get their way, but more chaotically via product reviews and back-room conversations. Even if the three main principles aren’t violated, feature factories can manifest as: "Culture of hand-offs" ? This is when sales & customer support share their requests, PM creates the roadmap and shares perfect PRDs, design creates the design, and engineering builds it. It’s modern waterfall or ‘departments as agencies’ "Constant re-organizations" ? This is another hidden form of control, where executives keep changing the charter in an effort to dictate what’s built. It's control via the org chart, instead of the features "Mismatch between planning and validation rigor" ? In this scenario, there appears to be planning science and principles. Problems and metrics are shared. But when it comes time to validate and discard HiPPO solutions, that never happens "Measuring wrong metrics" ? This is all about measuring vanity metrics that the team can move, based on what HiPPOs want to build, instead of what the business needs. It's classic confirmation bias instead of first principles strategy It's almost like “all routes lead to the feature factory.” And it's not untrue. For my money, only 1 in 4 PMs work in a fully empowered environment. What do you think?

When Launching Products, Don't Underestimate the Power of Partnerships? As product leaders, we often focus intensely on the product requirements, roadmaps, and release timelines. We meticulously plan every detail to try to capture the full scope of effort required to deliver. However, in doing so we risk underestimating critical constraints outside the walls of our companies. Over the years, I’ve seen many product launches derailed or dramatically delayed due to issues with external partners. A lack of alignment on priorities, unexpected delays in approvals, or technical complications can blow up budgets and timelines. The key is proactively building strong relationships with partners, suppliers, agencies, and any external groups involved in bringing your product vision to life. Taking time to understand their incentives, challenges, and processes pays huge dividends. With shared context, you can spot misalignments early and course correct. Approvals happen faster when you’ve already established trust and credibility.? When planning your next product launch, leave room in the budget and timeline for relationship building. Make sure your partners deeply understand the “why” behind what you’re doing. Overcommunicate timeline expectations and resourcing needs. The upfront investment will prevent the nightmare scenario of discovering critical issues months down the line. Building partnerships is the secret ingredient to navigating constraints smoothly. With alignment among all parties involved, you give your product launch the best chance of delivering on time and on budget. If you need any product help, check out EMERGE - UX Agency. The question that drives me: How can we make this valuable tool accessible to more people? Even the most ingenious solutions can fail if users find them difficult to navigate. This is especially true for complex enterprise tools. The key to adoption is simplifying the complexities. Here's how I approach making things easier to use: 1) Study real user workflows. Identify friction points and disconnects between their model and yours. Redesign experiences to meet user expectations. 2) Use interfaces that end users are familiar with. Draw on broader interaction standards. 3) Break down advanced functionality into manageable microinteractions. Reveal these progressively as user sophistication grows. Avoid overwhelming users upfront. 4) Structure workflows around business productivity objectives. Don't focus on the underlying technology constructs. Speak the language of user outcomes. 5) Offer interactive guided tours, proactive tips, and contextual help content. This helps smooth learning curves and support progression. While functionality is important, ease of adoption is the real game-changer when it comes to accessing value. What innovative ways have you used to make complex capabilities more accessible to users?

Single Feature MVPs are a low-risk, high-reward way to experiment and learn. They may not be sexy or sophisticated, but they can generate the evidence you need to make informed decisions. Of course, the key is to approach them with the right mindset. It's not about creating a stripped-down version of your final product. It's about isolating a core hypothesis and designing a lightweight experiment to test it. It takes a certain level of humility and curiosity to embrace Single Feature MVPs. You have to be willing to put your assumptions on the line and let the market guide you.

People initially thought the Amazon Dash Button was an April Fool's Joke. Little did they know Amazon was in the early stages of testing out Alexa and their away from screen purchasing strategy. I'd classify the Dash Buttons as a Single Feature Minimum Viable Product. I think we tend to overlook and possibly even laugh at Single Feature MVP’s when we first encounter them, but innovation is often viewed as a joke or a toy at first. A Single Feature MVP can help you generate the evidence you need to inform your strategy. Especially if that strategy is predicated on changing human behavior. In my work helping companies level up their digital products, I've seen the power of effective product management. David Pereira nails it when he says it's all about finding what brings value to customers and the business. Backlog Managers, however, get lost in the details of writing exact specs and appeasing stakeholders. They prioritize outputs over outcomes, speed over value. The key distinction? Product Managers are strategic leaders who motivate their teams to tackle significant problems. They forge partnerships, make decisions based on evidence, and aren't scared of a little conflict. Pereira puts it perfectly: "Product Teams create value with Product Managers. Product Teams create features with Backlog Managers." It's a stark but crucial difference.

What's the real challenge of PMs? The hard truth is that many companies want PMs to be Backlog Managers. Let's understand the difference between both and their impacts. First, let's tackle the understanding of product management. Most companies do not share a common definition, but I will share mine. Product management is the art of uncovering what creates value for customers and businesses. ? Good product management results in products customers love, enabling the business to thrive. ? Bad product management results in uninspiring products nobody cares about. I've contributed to bad product management—yeah, shame on me. Yet, I learned my lesson and crafted the Anti-BS PM course to help you avoid the blows I had to take. I've got you covered if you want to equip yourself to beat dangerous traps. I'm offering a special Easter deal - Link is in the comments. Now, let's understand the critical differences between Product Managers and Backlog Managers. ? Product Managers focus on uncovering value drivers ? Backlog Managers focus on writing precise backlog items ? Product Managers measure outcomes and make evidence-based decisions ? Backlog Managers focus on increasing velocity and shipping more ? Product Managers build partnerships with business and don't avoid conflicts ? Backlog Managers please business stakeholders without talking to users ? Product Managers inspire and empower teams to solve meaningful problems ? Backlog Managers plan by capacity, micromanage teams, and lack vision ? Product Managers don't let anti-patterns get in their way ? Backlog Managers are mostly unaware of anti-patterns ? Product Managers are authentic leaders ? Backlog Managers are uninspiring managers ? Product Teams create value with Product Managers ? Product Teams create features with Backlog Managers We need more Product Managers. We don't need Backlog Managers. Being a real product manager is hard because everyone pushes you in other directions. Yet, that's necessary to remain relevant. Let's defeat the anti-patterns and rock the product world together! Join my Anti-BS course, and let's rock it!

Does your product team culture drive innovation or instill fear? Brené Brown shares 16 key elements that separate armored leadership from daring leadership ?? Armored leadership is about perfectionism, scarcity, and fear. It's about wielding power over others and propagating false dichotomies. It numbs emotion and hustles for self-worth. A few armored elements that may ring true: ? Rewarding exhaustion as a status symbol and attaching productivity to self-worth. We glorify the hustle and grind. ? Leading for compliance and control rather than commitment. Our team structures are rigid. ? Weaponizing fear and uncertainty. We leverage FOMO and anxiety to drive desired behaviors. Daring leadership is about modeling empathy, taking risks, and cultivating commitment. It's about knowing our value and setting boundaries. It practices gratitude and leads from the heart. Now some daring elements to aspire toward: ? Practicing gratitude and celebrating milestones and victories. We take time to recognize achievements. ? Cultivating commitment and shared purpose. Our teams feel ownership over our product vision. ? Setting boundaries and finding real comfort. We support work-life balance and self-care. Now be honest with yourself - which tendencies run strong in your organization? Do you glorify the hustle or take time to recognize achievements? Do you leverage FOMO or build shared purpose? To build truly human-centered products, we must lead with empathy, vulnerability, and compassion. This armor we wear, it disconnects us from our values, from our teams, from meaningful work. We can't create truly human-centered products without daring to lead bravely. So I want you to know this: You are worthy of love and belonging. You don't have to constantly perform or prove yourself. Your imperfections are beautiful. Together we can build cultures of empathy and compassion. But first we have to shed the armor - we have to dare to lead.
