PET (look for the #1 on the container) plastic #recycling works. Oregon is a great example: their bottle deposit program achieves PET recycling rates above 75%! If we want to reduce plastic pollution, we need to get our PET plastic into recycling bins--where its journey is just beginning. Because PET can be endlessly recycled and made with up to 100% recycled PET, after the bin it's collected, separated, baled, ground, cleaned, and melted to create a?new PET bottle, in as little as six weeks. This #circular process reduces waste, conserves resources, lowers carbon emissions (PET is far lighter to transport than aluminum and glass), and helps get lightweight, durable, FDA-approved PET back on shelves and filling critical needs across the fields of healthcare, food safety, disaster relief, etc. All of that, simply by dropping PET in a bin! To help our planet and keep fully #recyclable PET plastic out of landfills and the #environment, always #RecycleThe1. Plastics have been in the news a lot lately. But not all plastics are the same. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and containers are safe, lightweight, resealable and shatter-resistant. Best of all, many PET bottles and containers are fully recyclable. Americans collect over 1.8 billion pounds of PET every year, helping to make it the world’s most widely recovered plastic.

NAPCOR's Executive Director Laura Stewart's letter to The Denver Post editor was published in response to a columnist, a self-reported “dedicated recycler,” who conversely calls plastic #recycling into question. Stewart writes that lightweight, durable, FDA-approved PET plastic (look for the #1)--important in healthcare, food safety, and #disasterrelief--is a proven, scalable solution for a #sustainable economy and gives proof that plastic recycling works: Oregon’s bottle deposit program achieves PET rates above 75%, demonstrating the power of smart policies. PLASTICS (Plastics Industry Association) Peter Krieger's letter was published alongside. We all agree: recycling is not part of the problem, it’s part of the solution. The truth about PET (#1 plastic) might surprise you: it's the most commonly used material for beverage containers & the most #recycled plastic in the world. Research shows PET has significant #environmental advantages over aluminum cans and glass bottles: PET creates less solid waste, requires far less energy to produce, has lower global warming potential, and creates fewer harmful emissions. What's more, PET is endlessly #recyclable. As part of the circular economy, the PET bottle you #recycle today can be turned into a new bottle back in your hand in just 6 weeks.?If you really want to pick the best packaging for the environment, #PickPET. And remember, always #RecycleThe1! https://lnkd.in/duzN93D5 #getthefacts #sustainability #circulareconomy #recyclingisreal

ICYMI ??: National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) released new research just before the holidays, which unveiled soaring PET plastic (look for the #1 on the container) bottle #recycling rates. Among the findings for 2023: * The US PET plastic bottle recycling rate was 33% — the highest recycling rate in nearly 30 years! * The North American (the US, Canada, and Mexico) PET bottle recycling rate was 41.3% — a new high! (Note: We’ve surpassed the 30% recycling “in practice and at scale” benchmark since we started tracking in 2019) * The average amount of post-consumer recycled PET, aka recycled PET, used in US bottles and jars was 16.2% — the highest level EVER! * The fraction of recycled PET that went into new bottles in the US and Canada reached a new high of 59% in 2023 — surpassing the previous high record! What does all of this mean? First, you’re choosing the environment when you #PickPET. Multiple studies show a typical PET soda bottle has LESS THAN HALF the greenhouse gas emissions of an aluminum can and about a FIFTH of a glass bottle, making PET the most environmentally friendly packaging option. And second, when you put your PET plastic in the recycling bin, it’s getting collected, recycled, and turned into a bottle on your shelves. Now THAT’S the definition of a #circulareconomy! Keep up the great work, y’all. Always #recyclethe1. When we work together to ensure PET is selected, collected, and recycled, our planet reaps the rewards: https://lnkd.in/emw9r-sq #circularity #sustainable #sustainability

A recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that, in North America, aluminum cans have 2x the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of PET plastic bottles (look for the #1 on the container) and glass bottles have 3x the GHG emissions, as reported by Reason magazine: https://lnkd.in/eSK6qZMz Those researchers also found that "replacing plastics with alternatives is worse for greenhouse gas emissions in most cases,” and “in 15 of the 16 applications, a plastic product incurs fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their alternatives” because “it takes less energy to make and transport them.” That's the thing - to truly assess a material's environmental impact, you have to consider it soup to nuts. This is just one of many studies agreeing: if we choose alternatives to PET plastic with a bigger environmental impact, we hurt the planet. Remember to always #PickPET and #RecycleThe1!

??Multiple studies say the same thing: PET plastic (look for the 1 on the container) differs from other plastics & is more sustainable than aluminum or glass. That's bc researchers considered ALL stages of a material's sustainability: production, fabrication, transportation, use, & end-of-life disposal. PET plastic bottles have a lower impact on several key environmental metrics, including greenhouse gas emissions, energy demand, water consumption, smog, acid rain, & climate change potential. PET bottles also create less solid waste and use less water during production. Plus PET is endlessly recyclable.?? If we choose alternatives to PET plastic with a bigger environmental impact, we hurt the planet. This year, let's choose--& recycle--the most sustainable packaging! ??Congrats to everyone who takes the time to put their PET plastic (#1 in the triangle) in the #recycling bin. Thanks to YOU, the PET plastic bottle recycling rate in 2023 reached the highest level — 33% — since 1996, and the North American (US, Canada, Mexico) rate has reached its highest level EVER, as National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR)'s new recycling report shows: https://lnkd.in/gF6eiahQ This is how a circular economy happens. This is how we end plastic waste. This is how we care for our planet. We applaud every single one of you! ?? #sustainability #newresearch #pickPET #recyclethe1 #recycling is real
