Portland Means Progress is a city-wide initiative that began with early adopter businesses in March 2019, providing connections for businesses to hire local underrepresented students, purchase from businesses owned by people of color and create diverse and vibrant workforce and company cultures. The goal is to connect businesses to existing programming that supports social impact, creating a pipeline for private-sector engagement.

  • We had an amazing time at the Portland Workforce Alliance breakfast last week! There were more than 5,000 students from 80+ high schools; we loved seeing the employers, colleges & apprenticeship training centers at over 200 booths, with hundreds of volunteers to make it happen. Thanks to all the Portland Means Progress businesses who were there! Incredible event - see you next year!

    It's finally here...the NW Youth Careers Expo is tomorrow! ?? We're excited to see students and employers take over the Oregon Convention Center to network and build connections. All day students will engage in hands-on demonstrations, practice mock interviews, learn skills in career talks and workshops, plus get the chance to talk directly with professionals about college-and-career options. It's gearing up to be the best Expo yet -- we'll see you all there! ??

  • Multiple state's attorneys general (including Oregon!) just released the "Multi-State Guidance Concerning Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Employment Initiatives". It provides a much needed response to growing concerns in the private sector about the viability of diversity, equity & inclusion initiatives. Key takeaway: "Companies should be fully confident that they can continue to implement these policies and programs to advance their business objectives and help ensure they remain compliant with state and federal civil rights laws."     Throughout 2024 we embarked on a journey to bring the Portland Impact Purchasing Pilot Program to life. The mission was to bring visibility, awareness and purchasing opportunities to local enterprises that use their profit to make an impact for people and our planet. These organizations became People and Planet First Verified. Among other metrics, all of these organizations solve social and/or environmental problems and reinvest the majority of profit for the many, not the few.?Learn more about our 2024 Pilot Program here: https://lnkd.in/gmqk5AA2 We are thrilled to be hosting our very first?People and Planet First Showcase, providing our community with the opportunity to learn all about these incredible, impactful organizations; what it means to be PPF verified; and how this movement is changing the way people make purchases.     Earlier this week, The Script and Portland Means Progress partnered on a virtual webinar, "The Perfect First Week – A Guide for Onboarding." Andrea Gall shared onboarding best practices to help companies think about before an employee starts, the first day, the first week, and beyond. I had the opportunity to moderate conversations with three The Script Internship alumni that were hired at the companies they interned. It was so great to hear Jabriel Pierce (Gard Communications), Maria Ortiz (Women's Healthcare Associates, LLC), and Lan Tran (On) share about their respective onboarding experiences and give advice to companies in attendance. They were all brilliant and I was so proud of them. It was an excellent and informative event (although I am bias ??)! #onboarding #workforcedevelopment #retention (cc: Prosper Portland; The Contingent)
