Wir gratulieren Erika Barreto zum bestandenen Promotionskolloquium! ???? Metallische Gl?ser sind Werkstoffe mit faszinierenden Eigenschaften. Mit ihrem amorphen Aufbau weisen sie keine geordnete atomare Struktur auf und zeichnen sich daher unter anderem durch eine hohe Festigkeit und sehr hohe Elastizit?t aus. Allerdings war die Anwendung oftmals dadurch beschr?nkt, dass teure Elemente ben?tigt wurden oder die Bauteilgeometrie stark beschr?nkt war. In ihrer Arbeit ?Production Chain lnvestigation of Cu-Ti-based Glass-Forming Alloys via Atomization and Laser Powder Bed Fusion Processes“ besch?ftige sich Erika Barreto damit, wie diese Beschr?nkungen durch Verwendung der additiven Fertigung umgangen werden k?nnen. Sie konnte zeigen, dass der Einsatz von Materialien in anwendungsnaher Reinheit m?glich ist. Interessanterweise stellte sich heraus, dass die Legierungssysteme, die seit Jahrzehnten für das Gie?en optimiert wurden, für die Prozesskette der additiven Fertigung weniger geeignet sind und dort eher einfache, bin?re Systeme eingesetzt werden sollten. Diese Erkenntnis ist grundlegend neu in diesem Themenbereich und wird den Bereich der Anwendung metallischer Gl?ser nachhaltig ver?ndern. Metallic glasses are materials with fascinating properties. Due to their amorphous structure, they lack an ordered atomic arrangement, which gives them high strength and exceptional elasticity. However, their application has often been limited by the need for expensive elements or restricted component geometries. In her research on ?Production Chain lnvestigation of Cu-Ti-based Glass-Forming Alloys via Atomization and Laser Powder Bed Fusion Processes“, Erika Barreto explored how these limitations can be overcome through additive manufacturing. She demonstrated that it is possible to use materials with industrial purity. Interestingly, she found that alloy systems optimized for casting over decades are less suitable for the additive manufacturing process, and simpler, binary systems should be used instead. This discovery is fundamentally new in this field and will have a lasting impact on the application of metallic glasses. I'm usually the only one on a panel or at a conference talking about cultivated meat pet food in America. And almost 10 years into this, I'm still the only one! That's because I don't really pay that much attention to macro trends or industry headwinds/tailwinds. As long as the underlying problem is still there – and ingredients in pet food are a massive, compounding sustainability problem – we'll need solutions. If you're in Dallas this fall at the Reducetarian Foundation Summit, come hear me speak! (I also plan to make my first visit to Slutty Vegan while I'm in the Lone Star State, and anyone is invited to join me there, also!)

CASE STUDY: While onboarding a multinational animal health biotech client this week, Kirkwall intern and Emerging Digital Academy graduate Riley DuBord was automatically alerted to a critical failure of a laboratory freezer system. Thanks to sensor hardware provided by our fellow Plug and Play Tech Center graduate company Rivercity Innovations feeding back to Kirkwall's software via instant API feeds built with our friends at Devii, laboratory managers sprinted across the lab and resolved the freezer failure- resulting in Kirkwall's software saving four years of archived cancer research samples, DNA, and tens of thousands of dollars worth of chemical reagents on day one. Last week, our team got to catch up with a handful of our Animal Health program alumni at SuperZoo. It was exciting to visit Arch Pet Food's and Augie Bones' booths and to hear the latest updates from Friends & Family Pet Food Company and Ten Lives. Fittingly, our Program Manager, Anne Gunden, also spoke on a panel about programs that support startups in the pet space.
