关于我们
Plant Heroes? creates innovative resources and programs which support public garden professionals, educators, and parents educate young learners (K-5th grade) about the importance of plants and forest ecosystems. We hope to spark curiosity and empower young learners to become agents of positive environmental change. To increase access, our educational materials are available in three languages: English, Spanish, and simplified Chinese. Current materials include journals, lesson plans, activity books, conservation comics, and field guides. Topics featured in the materials include forest ecology, journaling, plant adaptations, pollination, insects, fire ecology, developing a sense of place using mapping, using your senses, creating plant mandalas, wellness, invasive species, and more. These printable materials can be downloaded for free at the Plant Heroes website (www.plantheroes.org). Plant Heroes is supported by American Public Gardens Association in partnership with the USDA Forest Service.

Plant Heroes journals and discovery packs are a perfect match. Recently Ariel Christian, School & Out of School Programs Specialist with Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, WI shared this creative idea with us. "We use the Plant Heroes Journals in our activity packs that are available to check-out at our Lobby desk. Usually, families with young children check out the bags to explore the gardens together at their own pace. The journals have been a great addition to the packs! We laminated a couple sets of each so that they can be used again and again. Thanks, APGA & US Forest Service for this amazing, FREE resource!" #connectwithnature #PlantHeroes

Another creative idea from Miss Marie, the Children's Education Manager at Ruth Bancroft Garden. She recently sent us this photo of the Plant Heroes display she created for an outreach event. Thank you Marie for connecting others to our free education materials. You are our Plant Hero! She also recommended we create a marketing flyer that gardens could use at future events. Our new marketing flyer and poster is available for download on our website at https://lnkd.in/e7eXn63J. Learn more about the import work that Dr. Seana Walsh is doing to protect palm trees from the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle. Thanks Dr. Walsh for being a Plant Hero!
Coconut rhinoceros beetles sound and look like something straight out of a 1950s science fiction movie. These beetles are very real and pose a danger to palm trees in our member gardens in Hawai’i. The National Tropical Botanical Garden has the largest living collection of native Hawaiian palm trees in the world. Dr. Seana Walsh is the Conservation Scientist & Living Collection Curator and was recently interviewed by Island News. Dr. Walsh said the beetles are causing the palm trees to be listed as endangered. The beetles fly into the top of the trees and get up in the crown. Then the beetles bore into the heart of the palm and feed on the plant tissue. The boring eventually kills the palm trees. Staff have been busy prioritizing which palms are the most important to save. Once they determine the ones to save, they wrap netting around the palms. The net acts as a mechanical barrier preventing the beetles from eating at the crown. We hope the netting works well for our member gardens in Hawai’i. "The main concern is the potential loss of these species, our cultural heritage," Dr. Walsh shared with Island News.
