The middle of June is our favorite part of the school year! We get to be there and watch our graduates walk across the stage, ready for the next phase of their careers. For some, that means a first job. For others, it's means the opportunity to be promoted. For yet others, it means applying their prior experience to the emergency management field. And for some, it means setting the example for their kids! Born and raised in Lacey, Washington, Caleb’s journey into emergency management is one fueled by a passion for community, language access, and preparing for the unexpected! He’s inspired by the interconnected nature of emergency management—how it touches everything from cybersecurity to social planning. His dedication to helping others be prepared, starting with his family and extending to his community, is a driving force in his studies and future career. Caleb encourages others to pursue their passions and integrate them into their careers. For him, that means exploring the intersection of art, language, and emergency management. Pierce College was well represented at last week's International Association of Emergency Managers conference in Colorado Springs. Our faculty, adjunct faculty, and board members gave presentations, staffed booths, and volunteered their time to help make the conference a success. Adjunct faculty member Dr. Mary Schoenfeldt spoke on "The toll of the work we do on a tribal leader, a funeral service worker, and an emergency manager". Adjunct faculty member Lenora Borchardt, MBA, CEM, MEP did a mini talk in the Crisis Technology Center about using AI in training and exercise development. Board member Darrell Ruby, CEM, CHEC, NEMAA spoke on "Regional and National Special Pathogen Preparedness: Collaboration, Coordination, and Cooperation". Adjunct Professor and President of IAEM Latin America Gustavo Reina, MS, CEM?, MCP, EMPP volunteered in various roles around the conference. Finally, Program Chair Sarah K. The International Association of Emergency Managers is proud to announce Gustavo Reina, CEM, as the new President of IAEM-Latin America, effective July 1, 2024! Gustavo has been a dedicated member of IAEM for many years, contributing significantly in various roles. His dedication to the professional growth of others is evident in his role as an IAEM Mentor since 2020, where he has guided numerous candidates toward achieving their CEM certification. As a subject matter expert for IAEM AEM/CEM Exam Technical Reviews since 2022, Gustavo has been instrumental in maintaining the integrity and rigor of our certification exams. He also contributed his expertise to enhance the quality and organization of our conferences as part of the IAEM Region 6 Conference Workgroup (2024). Additionally, Gustavo played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and success of our events through his involvement in the IAEM Safe Events Initiative project (2024). Beyond his commitment to IAEM, Gustavo is a multifaceted professional in the field of emergency management. He is a faculty member of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Emergency Management Professional Program (EMPP), a college professor teaching the next generation of emergency management professionals, and an expert consultant providing advice and solutions in the field. Furthermore, Gustavo leads as the program manager for the largest Emergency Management Volunteer Organization Active in Disasters (VOAD) in central Texas.
