Twig’s Beverage in Shawano, WI, is the last returnable bottler of Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. Sun Drop brand, which they’ve been producing since 1951. While the retro soda tastes great, their 1950s legacy bottling equipment left the bottler with a sour taste in their mouth, with lots of tipping bottles and line breaks. To bring their line into the 21st century, Twig’s teamed up with their Wisconsin neighbor Multi-Conveyor and several other leading suppliers (including CIMEC, MCBRADY ENGINEERING, ProBrew ProMach, AROL S.p.A., CTM Labeling Systems, and Citronix, Inc) for a complete overhaul. The result? Fewer broken bottles, orders filled without headaches, and big plans for expansion. UPM Raflatac is offering a new carbon-conscious labeling option, Carbon Action Plastic Labels, at Labelexpo Americas 2024 in Rosemont, IL. Already in the market on products including Rebiome's ReFresh Cleansing Gel and Lumene Group's Nordic-C Glow Moisturizer, the Carbon Action Plastic Labels use bio-based polypropylene (PP) material to "enable brands to have plastic-based solutions that actually have an impact in lowering their carbon footprint," says Anna Hunt, senior manager of marketing and communications at UPM Raflatac. "For example, this portfolio includes products made from Forest Film face material, which is 100% wood based. We have products in this portfolio that are made from other bio-based materials that once again have a significant sustainability and carbon reduction impact," explains Hunt. Further contributing to carbon reductions are the label's liner options made from either 50% or 90% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. Products within the portfolio also use a wash-off adhesive for clean label removal for recycling. This combination of sustainable characteristics brings brands like Rebiome and Lumene, which both use the Forest Film PP product, a 23% reduction in primary energy demand and a 27% decrease in CO2e emissions compared to standard labels. "Having this full formulation in a product allows the brand to have a true reduction of their carbon footprint when it comes to the label part of the product," says Hunt.

Smart #packaging technology like ambient IoT from Wiliot can optimize sequencing in food and bev industries, according to Stephen Statler, consider “the number of times that supply chains get out of sequence, a FIFO [first in, first out] becomes a LIFO [last in, first out], the opportunity to move to not “first in, first out,” but “first expired, first out”. All of that needs to run, not just at one part of the supply chain, but right across the supply chain. The only way we're going to get there is with data standards like [GS1/GS1 US'] EPCIS, like Digital Link, and if the manufacturer, the brand, the distributor, and the retailer starts sharing the information, and then we build on the standards we already know well, and start embracing some of the new standards that coming online to make the market bigger,” he said at AIPIA's Smart Packaging Seminar.

“One of the big growth areas of #RFID in #packaging is the tracking of reusables and reusable containers. In this case, McDonald's’s needed to be in compliance with what's known as the AGEC [Anti-Gaspillage pour une économie Circulair] law in France. These laws are growing. There are more and more mandates around Europe, and coming into the U.S. as well, around minimizing single-use containers that are used in food. What we did with McDonald's there was provided an RFID inlay that was embedded inside of the food container, be it the fry pouch or the cup or the plate. All of that now is all reusable at McDonalds in France. Because we have it embedded RFID as an in-mold label, they can now monitor and track, where that container is [in the circular system]. Has it been cleaned? Is it ready for to go back out for using on the food line? The Checkpoint Systems service team installed RFID readers on the bins can make sure a container doesn't go into the trash bins. They follow them all throughout their wash cycle, where they're storing them, and then though the trash and recycling areas to make sure that they were not inadvertently going into the trash or food waste bin. That's just one example of this real emphasis that everyone from consumers all the way to government entities are having around this mindset of a more circular economy," said Louis Parker of Checkpoint in a RFID label panel discussion today at AIPIA's Smart Label Seminar in Chicago.
