A partnership between JEC Group and The European Composites Industry Association; EuCIA , this year's report presents the latest global initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable design, lifetime extension, and recycling technologies in the composites industry. TECH-FAB Europe contributed an article about its new initiative to develop life cycle assessments #LCA of key technical textiles product families. ?? Breakthrough in Wind Turbine Blade Recycling: ZEBRA Project Demonstrates Closed-Loop System ??? At LM Wind Power, we are proud to be part of the pioneering ZEBRA (Zero wastE Blade ReseArch) project lead by IRT Jules Verne, which marks a major milestone in the recycling and circular economy of wind turbine blades. Together with an incredible consortium of partners, we’ve demonstrated a fully closed-loop recycling system that brings significant environmental and economic benefits. Key Highlights: ?? Two wind turbine blades manufactured with Arkema’s Elium? resin and Owens Corning’s Ultrablade? fabrics, including recycled materials. ?? Arkema achieved 75% yield in recycling Elium? monomer via thermolysis, paving the way for industrial-scale recycled resin production. ?? Owens Corning recovered glass fiber, reintroducing it into their Sustaina? product line. ?? ENGIE’s life cycle analysis demonstrated both the environmental and economic viability of ZEBRA blades. By recycling manufacturing waste and end-of-life blades into new materials, we are tackling one of the industry's biggest challenges—blade disposal. This project highlights how innovation and collaboration can accelerate a sustainable future for wind energy. ?? The composites industry is widely appreciated for the diversity of its products and applications. Equally important for composites is growing the diversity of our leadership, including representation of women. In our business, we believe we have a role to play in this given our local partnerships and industry connections. Last week, more than 50 industry leaders and?Women in the Composites Industry?(WCI) ambassadors gathered at our World Headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, to take part in a mentoring session focused on networking, career planning, and empowerment of women in the industry. The event featured a panel discussion with leaders and professional coaches discussing the challenges and benefits of mentorship. This included career development and building authentic and trusting connections; capturing and leveraging external feedback for development; and empowering women through courageous conversations, being one’s authentic self, and building trust. Earlier this month, we also hosted a luncheon for women in composites during CAMX 2024.?The lunch event featured 60 industry representatives and leaders networking and discussing opportunities to help drive our industry. Key topics included marketing, material conversion, and business challenges. We support events like these because they provide essential connections, tools, and strategies for the development and advancement of women leading in composites. And this is fundamental to fully realizing the considerable talent, perspective, and insights women bring to the innovation, growth, and progress of our industry.
