  • ?? AAOS Bylaw Changes & Member Voting Rights ?? Proposed AAOS bylaw changes could limit member voting rights and reduce influence in leadership decisions—impacting how orthopaedic surgeons advocate for their profession. ?? Only Active Fellows would retain voting rights. ?? Board nominations could shift towards more Board-appointed positions. ?? Governance & Bylaws Committees may become Board-controlled. ?? Fellowship Vote Coming Soon – Make sure your voice is heard! ?? Read more: @OrthopedicsThisWeek #AAOSBylaws #Orthopaedics #MedicalLeadership #SurgeonAdvocacy

  • ?? Can Weight Loss Medications Improve Orthopaedic Surgery Outcomes? Obesity is a major factor in joint health and surgical success, with higher BMI increasing the risk of complications like infections, implant failure, and revision surgery. While lifestyle changes and bariatric surgery have long been options, anti-obesity medications—such as GLP-1 receptor agonists—are emerging as a promising tool. These medications promote gradual, controlled weight loss, which can significantly improve outcomes in total joint arthroplasty (TJA) by reducing stress on joints and lowering surgical risks. Even modest weight loss before surgery has been linked to fewer complications and better recovery. ?? Did you know? Patients with obesity are twice as likely to require revision surgery after a total knee replacement compared to those with a healthy BMI. A 10-pound weight gain post-surgery can increase implant failure risk by 35%! ?? Incorporating anti-obesity medications into pre- and post-operative care could help more patients achieve safer BMI levels, improve implant survival, and reduce long-term surgical risks. However, careful patient selection and ongoing research are needed to optimize their role in orthopaedics. Could these medications revolutionize joint surgery outcomes? • Reverse Hip Replacement System Addresses Critical Gap in Arthroplasty OrthoSpineNews?reports that the Reverse Hip Replacement System (Reverse HRS) has received FDA approval for compassionate use, offering a potential breakthrough for high-risk patients with spinal fusion. Traditional hip replacements often pose instability risks for these patients, but the Reverse HRS is designed to enhance stability and reduce dislocation rates. By utilizing a reverse geometry design, this system may improve surgical outcomes and reshape approaches to hip arthroplasty, providing new options for patients with spinal pelvic conditions. As more procedures are performed, its long-term impact on orthopedic surgery will become clearer. #OrthopedicInnovation #HipReplacement #SurgicalAdvancements

  • ?? Health disparities in orthopedic care: An ethical duty or systemic challenge? ?? Access to timely orthopedic treatment is not equal for all patients. Race, insurance status, and geography often determine who gets life-changing surgery and who doesn’t. Black patients are significantly less likely to undergo joint replacement despite experiencing arthritis at similar rates as white patients. Insurance barriers also delay care, with Medicaid patients facing longer wait times or outright denials for appointments. Rural patients must travel long distances for specialized care, making follow-ups even harder. These systemic issues raise a tough question: Can individual providers make a difference, or is the system too entrenched to change? ?? ?? The good news is that change is possible. Expanding telemedicine, increasing workforce diversity, and implementing bias training can help improve patient trust and outcomes. Policy changes such as Medicaid reimbursement reform could also make a huge impact. If you are a provider, consider partnering with rural hospitals, advocating for policy improvements, or supporting underrepresented students in orthopaedics. Equity in care is not just an ideal, it is a responsibility. Let’s work together to close these gaps! ???? • ?? Study Links Remifentanil & Sufentanil to Poor Post-Surgery Pain According to Healio, a study in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine suggests that using remifentanil and sufentanil during elective surgery may lead to worse pain outcomes the next day. Patients receiving these opioids reported higher pain levels, while younger age, no premedication, and orthopedic surgery were linked to better recovery. Dr. Axel Maurice-Szamburski urges a shift toward regional anesthesia and reduced opioid use to improve patient comfort and recovery. This research highlights the need for alternative pain management strategies in surgical care. #Anesthesia #PainManagement #Opioids #Surgery #PatientCare

  • ?? Why Standardization in Orthopaedic Surgery Matters Inconsistencies in orthopaedic procedures, training, and equipment introduce unnecessary risks for both patients and surgical teams. Differences in preoperative preparation, instrumentation, and technique increase the likelihood of errors, miscommunication, and complications. Research shows that standardization reduces infection rates and improves surgical efficiency, ensuring safer, more predictable outcomes. Hospitals that implement standardized protocols, like NYU Langone Medical Center, have reported fewer surgery cancellations and improved workflow coordination. Standardization also plays a key role in surgical training, preparing future orthopaedic professionals with consistent, evidence-based practices. While some argue that strict protocols may limit clinical flexibility, organizations like the AAOS and the Joint Commission emphasize that structured guidelines enhance patient safety without compromising surgical judgment. By advocating for standardized protocols in your institution, you can help create a safer, more efficient healthcare system.
