112 Years of Albanian Independence ????
Today, as we mark 112 years since Albanian independence 28/11/1912, I am filled with pride to be Albanian. Growing up as part of the Albanian diaspora in England, my connection to my roots has always been strong—thanks to my parents, who taught me the importance of our language, culture, and making the effort to visit Albania every year.
The saying goes, “You know I’m Albanian before you know my name,” and I’ve always strived to represent what being Albanian truly means. Bravery, ambition, hard work, and most importantly, the “besa”—our sacred promise to stay true to our word, a value Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu held as he defended our flag with honour.
But being Albanian hasn’t always come with the best first impression. From being asked, “Where’s that?” to being labelled during the communist era as the “North Korea of Europe,” or being tied to stereotypes in films like Taken or recent media narratives in the UK. Yet, the narrative is changing—and it’s changing because of us.
Albanian professionals across the globe are becoming role models, showing what it means to embody our values while excelling in every field. Organisations like GERMIN OriginAL and ALSA UK are paving the way for Albanians to grow, lead, and inspire the next generation. Through my work with Young Professionals I’ve met so many bright and eager Albanian students at events — students with ambition, dedication, and a thirst to learn. They are the true representation of what it means to be Albanian, and they are redefining our story for the better.
Our country is breathtaking, often referred to as the “Maldives of Europe” for its stunning natural beauty. But Albania is so much more—it’s the mountains, the lakes, the rivers, the beaches, and above all, the hospitality and community that define us.
To every Albanian reading this: take every opportunity to grow, educate yourself, and achieve greatness, but never forget your roots. Albania is calling. Whether it’s through economic, social, or environmental contributions, give back to the country that shaped us. Let’s uplift those who haven’t had the same opportunities and be the hand that helps them rise.
I am so proud to be Albanian, and every day, I work to be a true example of what that means. Let’s continue to represent our culture, change the narrative, and inspire the next generation of Albanians around the world. ????
