Innovation doesn't just appear out of nowhere. It comes from people being devoted to expanding our knowledge of how the world works, from the smallest particles to the biggest cosmic structures. We're grateful for everyone who contributes to that mission! #ThankfulForScience

Science Serving the Nation
关于我们
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science is the lead federal agency supporting fundamental scientific research for energy and the Nation’s largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences. The Office of Science portfolio has two principal thrusts: direct support of scientific research and direct support of the development, construction, and operation of unique, open-access scientific user facilities. These activities have wide-reaching impact. The Office of Science supports research in all 50 States and the District of Columbia, at DOE laboratories and more than 300 universities and institutions of higher learning nationwide. The Office of Science User Facilities provide the Nation’s researchers with state-of-the-art capabilities that are unmatched anywhere in the world.

“One of our goals is to help the students feel like they have an entry point into the world of STEM." - Mari Oates, Fermilab's educational digital learning and MakerSpace manager, describing the Science Accelerating Girls’ Engagement Camp. The camp is a five-day summer science experience aimed at inspiring students to pursue careers in a STEM field. https://lnkd.in/gCwrfvAU

Do Einstein's theories of gravity hold up at the largest levels? A new analysis of data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) combined with data from other sources has reinforced them. Nathalie Palanque-Delabrouille from Berkeley Lab discussed the results with New Scientist: https://lnkd.in/egXb3-9z

Scientists have recently found a unique gravitational lens, two aligned galaxies that are bending light from distant sources in a zig-zag pattern. The coverage in Gizmodo references the gravitational lens discovered by scientists at Berkeley Lab earlier this year. It was like “eight needles precisely lined up” in a haystack. These structures could help us understand the universe's expansion: https://lnkd.in/etYRDz8K

"Dark energy" is the nickname that scientists have for whatever is causing the universe to expand ever more rapidly. New data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (led by Berkeley Lab) are validating Einstein's theory of gravity but also suggesting that perhaps dark energy fluctuates over time: https://lnkd.in/e9i_sjfu
