Last Friday, #OaklandCounty celebrated the tenth anniversary of Manufacturing Day. On Friday, October 4, over 1,000 students from all 28 school districts around the county toured 34 manufacturing companies. Since the inception of Oakland County Manufacturing Day in 2015, over 10,000 high school students have toured hundreds of manufacturing companies across the county. Manufacturing Day festivities began on September 19 when tour hosts stopped by the Oakland County Executive Office building for tour host orientation. During the event, employers met Mia Wroblewski, Kiley Milorch and Bobby Larvick, three now full-time manufacturing employers who attended Manufacturing Day tours while in high school. Today these three Mfg Day alumni hold jobs at EMAG Group and NLB Corporation. At NLB, Wroblewski works as a welder and MIlorch as a machinist. Larvick spends his days at EMAG working as an apprentice trainer and mechatronics technician. Read more about these three at bit.ly/4gKTSam. At orientation, the Oakland County Manufacturing Day team also highlighted several tour hosts who have participated in the event for 5+ years. Special recognition was made for WENZEL America Ltd. The team at Wenzel has participated in all ten Manufacturing Day events, including two virtual events. Special thanks to the Wenzel team who have hosted hundreds of high schoolers and exposed them to careers in manufacturing. On October 4, Manufacturing Day kicked off with an event at Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northeast. Students were greeted by Dean of Oakland Schools Paul Galbenski, Representative Debbie Dingell and Representative Haley Stevens. The students also received a video message from Senator Gary Peters in which he stated, "Michigan manufacturers are helping to build the technologies of the future." Students then boarded their buses and headed towards their tour sites. At Humanetics located in Farmington Hills, students from Oakland Schools Technical Campus - Northeast explored careers in manufacturing crash test dummies; while 30 minutes away Hazel Park High School students at AkzoNobel were learning what a career as a paint and coatings manufacturer looks like. We even got the opportunity to hear from Mfg Day students on tours. One student stated, “At MacLean-Fogg Company the most interesting part had to be the employees; how comfortable they all seem in their field and how knowledgeable they are, and the fact that they’re able to demonstrate their knowledge to us.” Thanks to help from our incredible sponsors and tour hosts, BLM GROUP, Humanetics, Williams International, PolyFlex Products Inc., FATA Automation Inc and FANUC America Corporation, students toured companies, explored careers in manufacturing, and spent the day doing hands-on career exploration. We can’t wait for next year’s Manufacturing Day and the opportunity to expose more future workers to job options in the industry. #MfgDay24 #MfgOak
