  • Europe's biggest nuclear reactor reaches full power: Helsinki (AFP) Sept 30, 2022 Finland's long-delayed Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor has reached full power to become the most powerful electricity production facility in Europe, operator TVO said Friday, a boost amid a continent-wide energy crunch. With power level of 1,600 megawatts, the plant located on the Nordic country's southwestern coast is also now the third most powerful electricity production facility globally, th

EU Approves State Aid To Extend Lifespan Of Two Belgian Nuclear Reactors: EU competition regulators have approved Belgium’s plan to grant state aid to French energy company Engie’s Belgian business to extend the lifespan of two nuclear power reactors. Under the Belgian nuclear phaseout law of 2003, all seven* nuclear reactors in Belgium had to be permanently shut down by 2025. In March 2022, in light of concerns about security of supply in the context of the energy crisis and the Russian war against Ukraine, the Belgian federal government decided to keep the two newest Belgian nuclear power plants – Doel-4 near Antwerp and Tihange-3 near Liege – in operation for an additional 10 years. In June 2024, Belgium notified the European Commission of its plan to support the lifetime extension of the two nuclear reactors, which together have a net electricity generation capacity of more than 2,000 MW.

UEC Announces Milestone At Wyoming Uranium Operation As Ramp-Up Continues: Uranium Energy Corporation (UEC) has completed the processing, drying and drumming of uranium concentrates at its Irigaray central processing plant in Wyoming, a milestone in the phased ramp-up of operations at the company’s Christensen Ranch project. The milestone follows initial uranium production from the Christensen Ranch in-situ recovery (ISR) operation in August 2024. UEC had been working since early 2023 to move the facility out of care and maintenance after increases in the price of uranium. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Irigaray last produced uranium in 2018.

European Generation IV Nuclear Reactor Companies Join Forces On Materials R&D: European nuclear companies Blykalla and Newcleo have signed an agreement for the joint research and development of materials for Generation IV lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs). They said the partnership will involve the exchange of materials, results and data to help R&D programmes. By combining findings from their individual R&D programmes and industrialisation processes, the two companies hope to speed up the commercialisation of LFR technology, which they say is crucial for Europe’s decarbonisation efforts.

UK Regulator Ends Extra Security Checks At Sellafield: The UK’s nuclear regulator has dropped the requirement for extra security checks at the UK’s largest nuclear site. Guarding arrangements at the vast nuclear site in Cumbria, northwest England, have improved enough to allow for routine inspections from the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), rather than requiring “enhanced regulatory oversight”. The ONR said it could not make public what had triggered the escalation from routine monitoring due to security issues, but said the requirement was dropped following “sustained improvements”.

New Landmark For Nuclear Fusion As France Tokamak Sets Plasma Record: A nuclear fusion machine in southern France has set a new record for plasma duration, beating a record set in China earlier this year. On 12 February, the “West” machine, at the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission’s (CEA) Cadarache site, maintained plasma for more than 22 minutes – a total of 1,337 seconds. In so doing, it broke the previous record achieved in January by China’s East machine of 1,066 seconds by over 25%. In the process the plasma reached a temperature of 50 million °C.
