This week we marked the 14th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku-Honshu Japan earthquake and tsunami. The tsunami was first detected by the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research (NCTR) team at PMEL, resulting in inundation forecasts for Hawaii and the Pacific coast 6 hours before the tsunami arrived. This award-winning PMEL-based team led the way to the establishment of a tsunami warning network worldwide. Explore the Tsunami playlist on PMEL’s YouTube channel here: https://lnkd.in/gEMxEkSY

Federal laboratory with a mission to better understand the ocean and its interactions with the earth.
关于我们
NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) is a federal laboratory that makes critical observations and conducts groundbreaking research to advance our knowledge of the global ocean and its interactions with the earth, atmosphere, ecosystems, and climate. These observations are used to improve weather and climate predictions, fisheries management and coastal resilience. PMEL is a global leader in the development and deployment of innovative strategies for ocean observation. PMEL’s mission is to deliver trusted scientific information through innovative oceanographic and atmospheric research, observations, and technology development in support of society's response to urgent global and regional environmental challenges. Research areas at PMEL include ocean acidification, tsunami detection and forecasting, air-sea interactions, hydrothermal vent systems, fisheries oceanography, and long term climate monitoring and analysis. JOIN THE CICOES TEAM AT THE PACIFIC MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL LAB! In partnership with NOAA PMEL, CICOES is now hiring a Research Scientist/Engineer IV: Transient Tracers Sea-going Scientist. This employee will be responsible for leading the transient tracer laboratory at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle. They will be expected to perform original research utilizing transient tracer observations, as well as follow their own scientific interests in related oceanographic research. They will be responsible for making measurements of transient tracers such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs and sulfur hexafluoride) and nitrous oxide at sea, analyzing samples at sea and on land, and performing quality control checks on measurements, in support of repeat hydrography projects conducted by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). At sea they may be asked to mentor one or two more junior technicians, including students. This CICOES employee will work within the Global Observations of Biogeochemistry and Ocean Physics (GOBOP) group at PMEL in Seattle, and primarily support the U.S. Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP). Closes 1/31/2025 https://lnkd.in/gYH2g9g7 #cicoes #noaajobs #noaapmel

With last week's sizable earthquake off of California and the associated issuance of a tsunami warning, this is an opportune time to highlight the science behind tsunamis. Thankfully, a sizable tsunami did not materialize from that earthquake and the warning was quickly cancelled. The event underscored the importance of our Pacific observing system for tsunamis and the science done by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) that underpins our ability to detect these events and warn those that may be in harms way. #noaa #tsunami #research
