At NCCOS’ busy Kasitsna Bay Laboratory, researchers study aspects of coastal ecosystems ranging from microscopic algae to sea otters in Kachemak Bay. Miami’s sea level has risen by more than four inches since 1994 and is projected to continue rising. The most direct approach to restoring deep coral communities that were impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is to help new corals grow and reproduce, with the goal to repopulate the impacted areas. Propagating corals at these depths has rarely been attempted so each new step is pushing the boundaries of coral restoration.
