This month, during an expedition aboard Ocean Exploration Trust's Exploration Vessel Nautilus near American Samoa, researchers are testing a new, autonomous approach to locating seafloor fluid flow sites, like hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. Ultimately, this project has the potential to improve our knowledge about seafloor vents and seeps and the marine life they support. 关于我们
NOAA Ocean Exploration is a federal organization dedicated to exploring the unknown ocean, unlocking its potential through scientific discovery, technological advancements, partnerships, and data delivery. We are leading national efforts to fill gaps in our basic understanding of the marine environment, providing critical ocean data, information, and awareness needed to strengthen the economy, health, and security of the United States and the world.

Did you know that 90% of our ocean is considered “deep,” with depths greater than 200 meters (656 feet)? Yet the majority of these waters remain unseen by human eyes. While this remote realm remains largely removed from the everyday human experience, it is nonetheless intertwined with our marine resources and ways of life, with vast cultural significance. On September 10-11, please join us to paint, draw, learn about, and explore the deep ocean with a FREE event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center (76 Kamehameha Ave, Hilo, HI / 808-498-4709). During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to take a drawing or painting class from local artist Patrick Ching, participate in ocean-themed activities like coloring, meet and talk with ocean explorers, and see videos and other highlights from deep-ocean exploration in the monument. NOAA Ocean Exploration selected four projects for financial support through its Ocean Exploration Fiscal Year 2024 Funding Opportunity. Totaling over $2.1 million, these projects will explore the mesophotic coral ecosystems off the western coast of Puerto Rico, study the biodiversity of deep-pelagic crustaceans from the waters off Southern California, explore and document a collection of nationally significant shipwrecks in the deep waters of Lake Michigan’s Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary, and more. Survey technicians Cassandra Dahl and Sophie Caradine-Taber prepare to conduct XBT casts during the current Beyond the Blue: Johnston Atoll Mapping 1 expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer! XBTs, or expendable bathythermographs, are small torpedo-shaped probes used to collect ocean temperature data, which is in turn used to generate?a temperature profile. Scientists then use software that combines temperature profiles from an XBT with surface salinity data to determine an overall sound speed profile. The sound speed values can then be applied to multibeam soundings in real time for an accurate measure of bathymetry. Learn more about XBTs here:?https://lnkd.in/e8wX_d5C Images courtesy of Art Howard, Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration. #ocean #exploration #technology #XBT #science #mapping

Hilo-based friends: On September 10 and 11, join us for a FREE event at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center (76 Kamehameha Ave / 808-498-4709) focused on understanding our connections with the deep ocean. As part of the event, local artist Patrick Ching will be hosting (free) classes! In the morning (approximately 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.), all are welcome to learn how to draw deep-sea animals through a series of short courses. And in the afternoon (starting at approximately 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.), pre-register for a class to paint your favorite ocean critters. To register for a painting class, visit: https://lnkd.in/dwAY6Wz2 For more information on the whole event, visit: https://lnkd.in/evk9mKJb #ocean #exploration #event #Hilo #learn #art #draw #paint #learn [With NOAA Ocean Exploration and NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries]

Sponge. While the term may conjure up images of a bathroom loofah or the plastic, yellow rectangle next to your kitchen sink, sponges are in fact important animals in the deep ocean. They are ancient, complex, bizarre, and beautiful. As proof, here are a few different sponges seen during our exploration of deep waters near?Hawai?i.
