"Data is not just data. Content is not just content. Both are created by people, and when it comes to both research and technology, the feelings of and impact on those people should be a consideration.” – Casey Fiesler Thanks to our afternoon keynote speaker, Dr. Fiesler, for closing out our symposium out with “When Data is People,” considering ethics, privacy, and ownership for research and AI uses of public data. Look for a link to the recording of her talk next week!

关于我们
In June 2018, Northwestern Mutual, Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee came together to create the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI), a groundbreaking partnership that contributes to the formation of a technology ecosystem and advances southeastern Wisconsin as a national hub for technology, research, business and talent development, while creating an organic pipeline of tech talent in the area. As a?Center of Excellence in five key areas – AI, AI & Data Ethics Bias, Health/Wealth Inequality, Behavioral Economics, and Financial Literacy – the NMDSI seeks to inspire the next generation of data scientists and cultivate passion for data science, galvanizing the brightest minds in Milwaukee and beyond to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. Through our three pillars – research, talent, and community – we solve important business and community challenges by harnessing the power of data for research and scientific discovery, preparing future data science professionals to advance the region, and partnering with area non-profit organizations to address issues facing some of our most vulnerable populations.

Thank you Dr. Alondra Nelson for a thought-provoking discussion on "How to Govern the Future" as part of our AI Ethics Symposium today, where we learned that in order to steward the outcomes we want for these powerful new technologies, we must reframe the challenge of #AI and use the existing tools we have while being innovative and building mechanisms for change.
