I was honored to represent NJ TRANSIT at the Smart Cities Connect Conference in Raleigh, NC. where NJ TRANSIT's UAS (drone) program was recognized as a winner in the annual IDC Smart Cities North America Award program for innovation in Transit Infrastructure applications. https://lnkd.in/gF6EhmzU NJ TRANSIT, the 3rd largest transit agency in the country with over a million daily riders, employs drone technology for enhanced operational safety and efficiency across the tri-state service area. Having secured FAA approval and waivers for limited beyond visual limits (BVLOS) operations, our program has brought significant improvements to NJ TRANSIT, resulting in cost savings and paving the way for future logistic initiatives. NJ TRANSIT has achieved a number of milestones with its UAS program to include operating as both a Public Aircraft Operator (PAO) under Part 91 as well as under Part 107, leveraging commercial 5G technology for command and control, using optical "detect-and-avoid" video analytics during BVLOS operations, and gaining access to restricted airspace above the busy Hudson River near the Hoboken terminal. NJ TRANSIT's UAS technology actively monitors and addresses transport and logistics roadblocks, enhancing equipment maintenance and safeguarding personnel from potential hazards. This innovation has notably improved return on investment and eliminated safety risks associated with traditional monitoring methods across NJ TRANSIT's extensive network of transportation and logistics infrastructure. The versatility of our UAS initiative promises limitless possibilities beyond the current operational scope.
