Building Research Partnerships for Healthy Tribal Nations
关于我们
Across the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is increasing focus on the health of American Indians and Alaska Natives and a growing portfolio of Tribal health research. The NIH Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) was established in 2015 to ensure meaningful input from and collaboration with Tribal Nations on NIH policies, programs, and priorities. It is the central point of contact at NIH for federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribes throughout the U.S. and the coordination hub for Tribal health research activities at NIH. The THRO team is focused on enhancing capacity for research in Native communities, promoting opportunities for the next generation of AI/AN researchers, and disseminating transparent and culturally aware information about NIH and biomedical and behavioral research. Part of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) in the Office of the Director (OD), THRO also provides technical support to the NIH Tribal Advisory Committee (TAC) and drives agency-wide progress related to the NIH Strategic Plan for Tribal Health Research. At THRO, we are committed to advancing the health of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities — including through development of policies that respect and uphold Tribal sovereignty. In September, THRO convened an Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS) meeting with Tribal leaders, Indigenous scientists, and data sovereignty experts to address essential issues surrounding AI/AN data collection, ownership, stewardship, and dissemination.? This collaborative effort marks an important step in developing an NIH Indigenous Data Sovereignty Policy, ensuring AI/AN data rights are protected and guided by Tribal principles and Indigenous voices are not erased.?
