The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) is proud to release the NIH ODS Strategic Plan for 2025–2029, A Blueprint for a Coordinated Dietary Supplement Research Agenda at NIH. The plan reimagines ODS with new goals, objectives, and strategic priorities. These build upon ODS’s competencies and ongoing activities to address our mission to coordinate collaborative, innovative, and cutting-edge dietary supplement research across NIH and other federal agencies to foster knowledge and optimize health across the lifespan. The Strategic Plan is organized around three primary goals that emphasize research, research capacity, and fostering stewardship. These goals and their interconnected objectives will enable ODS to develop new research initiatives and promote resources to understand how dietary supplements modulate resilience and health across the lifespan in diverse populations. Strengthening knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements.
关于我们
The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the lead federal government entity addressing the scientific exploration of dietary supplements. ODS is located in the NIH Office of the Director in the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives in Bethesda, MD. ODS was established by Congress as part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-417, DSHEA). Its mission is to strengthen knowledge and understanding of dietary supplements by evaluating scientific information, stimulating and supporting research, disseminating research results, and educating the public to foster an enhanced quality of life and health for the U.S. population. ODS scientific staff have international reputations for their work in the fields of analytical chemistry, pharmacognosy, biochemistry, epidemiology, clinical nutrition, dietetics, and health communications, allowing ODS to address the complex and sometimes challenging issues pertaining to dietary supplements. Researchers have hypothesized that higher intakes of omega-3s from foods or supplements might reduce the risk of cancer due to their anti-inflammatory effects and potential to inhibit cell growth factors. However, results from observational studies have been inconsistent and vary by cancer site and other factors. For example, some evidence suggests that higher long-chain omega-3 intakes reduce the risk of breast and possibly colorectal cancers. However, a large clinical trial found that long-chain omega-3 supplements did not reduce the overall risk of cancer or the risk of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancers. https://lnkd.in/eP_ByqmP

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has selected 13 established scientists to comprise its third class of Climate and Health Scholars. The purpose of the NIH Climate and Health Scholars Program is to connect climate and health scientists from outside the federal government with NIH researchers to share their knowledge and expertise in this important field. This collaboration is part of the NIH Climate Change and Health Initiative’s (CCHI) efforts to build climate and health training and capacity across NIH. The NIH CCHI aims to lead solutions-focused research to reduce the health consequences associated with extreme weather events and evolving climate conditions. ODS is excited to be hosting Jun Wu, Ph.D., Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health, University of California, Irvine. Dr. Wu will bring her expertise in exposure assessment, environmental epidemiology, and environmental justice to the office.
