Yesterday’s Family Literacy Event at Robinson Elementary School with Tampa Electric was pawsitively awesome! Our favorite big red dog joined us to share some free books, activities and more with Hillsborough County families. UF Lastinger Center's free reading program that mails books & resources to eligible VPK-5th grade students in Florida.

New Worlds Reading is Florida's free at-home reading program for eligible VPK-5th grade students to develop their literacy skills, build their reading confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading. Eligible students receive monthly deliveries of free books and reading activities each school year through fifth grade, for a total of nine free books per year. Families can apply at www.newworldsreading.com. New Worlds Reading was created and funded with unanimous support by the Florida Legislature under the leadership of House Speaker Chris Sprowls, and was signed into law in 2021. The University of Florida Lastinger Center for Learning, which designs education innovations for children and educators, serves as the state-appointed administrator of the project.

We hosted our first New Worlds Reading Teacher Professional Learning sessions of the summer this week! It was amazing to connect with more than 350 VPK - 5th grade teachers across Leon, Orange and Alachua County while providing training on the Science of Reading, classroom instruction and our #NewWorldsReading resources. Thank you to everyone who came out to our sessions this week. Next up, Lee County!

We’re getting ready to host our #NewWorldsReading Teacher Professional Learning sessions this summer! Between preparing our UF Lastinger Center for Learning staff and informing our representatives from some of our Regional Partners, we’re so excited to get our first sessions started in June. Shoutout to our partners at the Heartland Educational Consortium, The Lucy Project, the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium for helping with this professional learning opportunity!
