???IMechE Conference March 2025??? This week, Matthew Hammond (Hydrogen Innovation Engineer) and Greg Taylor (FutureGrid Senior Engineer) attended the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) - Engineering Challenges in a Hydrogen Economy conference in Birmingham. Matthew was asked to speak about how National Gas are looking to repurpose the National Transmission System (NTS) for hydrogen and hydrogen blends, to support net zero and Clean Power 2030.? He said, “It was a pleasure to be invited back to attend and speak at the event. There were a range of interesting presentations covering the whole hydrogen supply chain and it was great to hear about experiences from real-world hydrogen projects.” Greg added, “I thoroughly enjoyed the past couple of days; hearing about and discussing the challenges that the hydrogen industry is facing, as well as some of the solutions to overcome them. My role in the HyNTS Deblending for Transport project meant I was pleased to see such strong representation from the mobility sector.”? Innovation is a key stakeholder priority for National Gas, supporting our business to deliver gas reliably, safely and efficiently to our customers today. At the same time, the future of our network depends on transitioning to a low-carbon alternative to natural gas, to continue providing energy for power generation, industrial processes, storage and transport. Innovation is at the heart of our business.?Our innovation work focuses on increasing the efficiency of our maintenance and operational activities today, while enabling our transition to net zero for the future.

??♂?Innovation Insights – Asset Development???? As we look to decarbonise our network, we’re exploring the different types of net zero gases (hydrogen, carbon and biomethane) and the role they could play. ‘Asset Development’ is one of our five themes and explores in detail, the different impacts that these gases may have on our existing network assets, works to identify suitable mitigations, and assess the safety standards and procedures needed to effectively manage a more efficient, lower emission network.?? Our ‘Electric drive opportunities for hydrogen compression’ project is one example of this type of work. Compression plays a key role in operating the National Transmission System (NTS), providing the necessary flows and pressures to move gas around the network and meet demand. As we transition our network, compression solutions for 100% hydrogen and blends of hydrogen will be needed.?? However, previous work has demonstrated that higher blends of hydrogen require more power to achieve the same level of compression. This project is looking at the opportunity of using novel variable speed electric drive solutions which could be powered by renewable electricity, to efficiently move hydrogen throughout our network. It also addresses the safety considerations and business case of using these solutions. This is just one example of the types of asset focused projects we’re looking at, to help us gather the evidence needed to repurpose our network to transport net zero gases.?? We’ll be focusing on the Asset Development theme for the rest of March and we'll be hearing more from Hydrogen Innovation Engineer and theme lead, Matthew Hammond on what’s coming up in this space! ??Everyday uses of Carbon Dioxide??? ? While CO2 is new territory for National Gas, it is already inextricably linked to everyday life. We’ve rounded up a few of the most common uses in this handy carousel – some of them may surprise you!?? Alongside these existing uses, we’re looking forward to seeing what CO2 may be used for in future. There’s already evidence to suggest it could potentially have a place as a fuel for the maritime and aviation industries.????? Transporting carbon dioxide using our network could pave the way to unlocking some of these new uses and is an exciting step towards a net zero future.?? #carbondioxide #CCUS #cleanenergy #innovation #engineering

??Xoserve Blog - Corinna Jones shares our 'Three Molecule Approach'?? Director of Clean Power and Innovation, Corinna Jones recently met up with James Verdon and Orlando Minervino from Xoserve. She shared how we plan to decarbonise the NTS by focusing on three molecules; methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.?? Check out the blog post to find out what they discussed including the new technology and innovations that are required to achieve our net zero targets.?? #innovation #threemolecule #hydrogen #ccus #carbondioxide #methane
How is National Gas preparing for a net zero future? National Gas is a cornerstone of the UK energy system. But how is this giant preparing for decarbonisation behind the scenes? We discussed it with Corinna Jones, their Director of Clean Power and Innovation. Find out what she had to say, and how their 'Three molecule approach' to gas decarbonisation will work, in our new blog: https://lnkd.in/e5Q9pz2t #decarbonisation #netzero #futureofenergy

??Innovation School Visit?? Today, Katie Jones (Innovation Analyst) and Emily Ly (Hydrogen Strategy Manager) were invited to Stratford Girls' Grammar School to present to the sixth form Geography students. They gave an overview of hydrogen, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS), and National Gas’ three molecule approach to decarbonise by 2050.??? Katie said “We felt truly privileged to be invited to talk to the students about what we get up to at National Gas." She continued, "Global warming is the single biggest threat that we collectively face, so it was a real joy to be able to talk to a talented group of young women about our roles and the part we’re playing in the journey to net zero.”? ?? Characteristics of Carbon Dioxide??? ? We’re looking at using our existing pipelines to transport Carbon Dioxide (CO2), primarily as part of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) activities. However, CO2 has characteristics that differ from natural gas. So, what does this mean??? Much like natural gas, CO2 is colourless and odourless, but where natural gas is lighter than air and will rise, CO2 is dense and will sink to the ground. CO2 also differs from natural gas as it is non-flammable. These differences in characteristics mean that the gas behaves differently, which presents a new set of considerations when it comes to transporting it… This is where innovation plays a key role!?? We’re running projects that look at the characteristics of CO2 and what impact this could have on our everyday activities such as working on the pipes, maintenance and leak detection. Then, of course there are the considerations around operating the network if a portion of it is moving CO2, and not natural gas.? While this may seem quite daunting, we think it’s worth the effort! CCUS is expected to play a crucial role in meeting net zero targets??, and previous studies have shown that repurposing some of our pipelines to transport CO2 is not only feasible, but could have real cost benefits compared to building new pipelines specifically for transporting CO2 for CCUS activities.??
