Director of Argonne National Laboratory research centers focused on economic development, community resilience, and emergency management
It was a pleasure to represent the National Economic Research and Resilience Center (NERRC) at the Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR) annual summit in Pikeville, KY. I spoke about how communities can leverage our data tools and #artificialintelligence to assist in economic development activities such as grant applications and planning. We had a lively and enjoyable conversation. A few takeaways: 1. Eastern #Kentucky is stunning in the fall. 2. There is a tremendous amount of innovation and creativity happening throughout #Appalachia. 3. AI is a really promising resource for economic developers and could especially help communities with limited staffing capacity. It can make tasks more efficient. It can help piece disparate pieces of data together. It can help you be more succinct or to make dense topics more accessible. 4. It cannot replace the most essential things humans bring to the table - only people know what is best for their communities and creative problem solving from humans remains imperative. 5. Detailed and clear prompts, along with as much reference/training materials goes a long way in improving outputs from Large Language Models. 6. More folks are using AI in their daily work than I even realized. Training on best practices, limitations, and ethical AI use will go a long way. Looking forward to more conversations on this topic moving forward. And stay tuned for some more research from our team soon. As always, thanks to the U.S. Economic Development Administration for supporting our work. #economicdevelopment #resilience #innoavation
