It might surprise you to learn that almost all my headshots and business portraits are taken in front of the same white background! A lot of my clients love the high key look of white, though grey is slightly more popular. I rarely shoot on black unless it’s to match a corporate specification. But thankfully even then I use my white vinyl backdrop! It’s super convenient as I don’t need to keep switching things up, and all I need to do is lower the power of my background lights to change from white to grey. And to turn them off completely to create the black background. And it’s all down to a neat bit of science called the inverse square law! This states that the intensity of light is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from its source. Translated into English, this means I can position my subject well in front of the backdrop and very close to my lights, so that they are brightly lit but none of that light reaches the backdrop. Meaning I can light the person and the backdrop independently of each other. If you wanted something more colorful I can add gels to my lights, or switch up the background in post.
