A great first day from our Gulf-Alaska Knowledge Exchange being held in Anchorage, AK! Participants discussed the socio-economic impacts of oil spills to small-scale fisheries, tourism, and the subsistence way of life. Key takeaways focused on the importance of centering community needs and voices and prevention of oil spills as the most effective form of preparation. Right now, southern states are being devastated by multiple high-intensity #hurricanes, resulting in another compounding disaster. These disasters leave no time or ability to recover and introduce new and complex risk scenarios for communities, decision-makers, and disaster managers. A recently released National Academies consensus study looked at the challenges experienced by Gulf communities following the multiple #disasters that hit the region in 2020 and 2021. One conclusion of the study that there is critical need to strengthen built infrastructure, especially #housing, since safe, secure shelter is critical for withstanding compounding disasters. That’s why the Academies is having this timely discussion on the impacts of these disasters on peoples’ homes and what decision makers can do to build stronger, more resilient communities. Though short-lived in the atmosphere, methane is over 80 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over a 20-year period. Together with reducing carbon dioxide emissions, large reductions in methane emissions are needed to limit warming and impacts from climate change – yet global methane emissions continue to rise each year. A new report from @The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine recommends a research agenda to fully assess the need and potential for atmospheric methane removal. Atmospheric methane removal is human interventions to accelerate the conversion of methane in the atmosphere to a less potent form or to physically remove methane from the atmosphere and store it elsewhere, but this approach is nascent. This new report identifies five priority research areas that would inform the technical, economic, and social viability of atmospheric methane removal at climate-relevant scales. The Florida Everglades is a treasured ecosystem, but the water quality, quantity, flow, and distribution have been dramatically degraded by drainage and infrastructure development during the past century. For over two decades, state and federal agencies have worked to reverse the decline of the ecosystem. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have provided biennial reviews of restoration progress since 2004, and the newly released tenth biennial report in the series highlights significant recent achievements. The report also offers guidance on applying Indigenous Knowledge to restoration planning and management and strategies to better incorporate new information to improve restoration outcomes. Welcome to our new Science Policy Fellow, Ashlynn Smith! Ashlynn Smith is an Interdisciplinary Ecology PhD candidate at the University of Florida's School of Natural Resources and Environment. Her doctoral research has focused on shrub encroachment in wet prairies of the Florida panhandle, investigating the negative impacts of shrub encroachment on groundwater, vegetation, and soil, as well as methods to best remove shrubs and return the system to reference conditions.

Welcome to our new Science Policy Fellow, Kandake Wallace! Kandake May Wallace is currently a first-generation PhD candidate in Environmental Science at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) with a concentration in Policy and Risk Management and is a former inaugural Bison STEM Scholar at Howard University. Her research focuses on environmental justice and political participation, as well as climate resiliency and weather disaster preparedness.
