To produce a durable STEM educational system that can continuously improve itself through cycles of reflection, innovation, implementation, and improvement, systemic change is needed. Over several decades, the federal government has allocated resources to strengthen education in science, technology, engineering, and math—leading to the development of a rich variety of educational innovations to support teaching and learning within the STEM disciplines. However, these efforts often fall short reaching their potential as they encounter numerous barriers to scalability and sustainability. Our new report examines factors at local, regional, and national levels that impact widespread implementation of Pre-K–12 STEM education innovations and recommends actions to scale up promising programs, practices, models, technologies.
