Our February guest contributor is Megan Francis. Most of us know Megan as Chief Experience Officer at CROSSROADS INC OF MUSCATINE…but Megan is also passionate about volunteerism. Some of her favorites include Walk to End Alzheimer's, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, MCSD Mobile Food Pantry, Rotary, GMCCI, Members Community Credit Union, Lutheran Living, Habitat for Humanity, Keep Muscatine Beautiful (Almost Friday Fest), the United Way, and of course, Crossroads, Senior Resources, and The Muscatine Senior Center. Read on to learn why… “Someone recently asked me, ‘Who am I outside of work and being a mom?’ Initially, the question gave me pause. As I reflected on it, another identity came to light—a volunteer. Outside of work and family, I am happiest when I volunteer and here are my reasons why: ?? PASSION: I volunteer for causes close to my heart. I’ve served as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event chair for five years because I am passionate about finding the first survivor. ?? CONNECTION: Volunteering introduced me to my community when I first moved to Muscatine, and it continues to bring new friendships with every event. The people I volunteer with and for have become part of my support system. I live by the mantra ‘When you show up for people genuinely, they will show up for you.’ ?? PROFESSIONAL GROWTH: Serving on boards has taught me invaluable skills. Many organizations need dedicated board members, and the experience is rewarding. ?? COMMUNITY: Helping neighbors is what being part of a community is all about. ?? LEGACY: I want my kids to grow up knowing that giving back is simply what we do. I may not always be able to give financially, but I can always give my time. Beyond everything, giving my time fills my bucket in ways nothing else can. There is a moment each time I volunteer when I pause to acknowledge the impact of my work. Sometimes that’s looking out at all the Walk participants holding colorful flowers representing their loved ones, seeing the line of cars whose pantries will be filled by the mobile food pantry, or hearing the appreciation from event organizers whose day goes a little easier because I helped set up or redirected traffic. These moments are each a ray of sunshine. We can all give something back to our community.
