How can innovation in #GreenEnergy change the future of Africa? One powerful way: by engaging young entrepreneurs who are pioneering clean energy solutions.? ? We have just released the Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy Impact Review, highlighting the transformative power of supporting local innovators tackling local challenges. In 2022, the Milken-Motsepe Prize launched a $2 million global competition to expand access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable off-grid electricity across Africa.? ? Among the groundbreaking solutions from the competition were solar microgrids powering custom-designed tractors for deep-bed farming and a containerized electricity generation and storage system for remote communities.? ? These innovations continue to impact over 9,000 community members, including smallholder farmers, individual consumers, government agencies, and businesses. Last year, the surgeon general declared gun violence a public health crisis, yet only one percent of total philanthropic funding in the US supports crime- and violence prevention-related endeavors. Gun violence has begun to decline since its recent peak in 2021, with some cities experiencing nearly a 40% decrease over the last two years. This shows that investments in gun violence prevention are working—it is a sign to continue investing, not to pull back. Last week at the Northwell Health Gun Violence Prevention Forum, Emily Musil moderated a panel discussion with Julie Morita, Thea Monta?ez, and Rev. Michael McBride, discussed how to continue the recent momentum in reducing gun violence, find new ways to collaborate and apply a social innovation lens that involves all different types of stakeholders—philanthropy, government, business, and community organizations. Gun violence touches almost every aspect of the social impact sector – everything from housing to food security to economic mobility to education.
