Imposter scams are evolving with AI technology. In 2023, scams resulted in $2.7 billion in losses. Our laws must keep up to protect against these threats. We can protect content authenticity by requiring disclosures and the use of cutting-edge provenance tooling to label this synthetic media, and policymakers need to pass new laws to protect against abusive deepfakes. In December, we launched a new partnership with AFL-CIO focused on AI and the future of work. As part of our commitment to incorporating direct feedback from labor leaders and workers, we hosted our first AI Labor Summit on the Microsoft campus. During the summit, we exchanged ideas, insights, concerns, and excitement about AI technologies. Here are a few takeaways: ?? While we recognize the challenges and risks associated with AI, we’re also excited to explore ways to leverage this technology to address labor issues and other societal challenges. We need to develop AI responsibly by ensuring humans are at the center and AI systems treat workers fairly. ??Input from workers is important for developing AI, and we plan to use pilots and research to develop methods for incorporating such feedback. ??AI is evolving work. We saw demos from organizations that are harnessing AI to transform their businesses by enriching employee experiences, reinventing customer engagement, and reshaping business processes. #AI #ResponsibleAI #Microsoft #FutureOfTech

I grew up in the country. We now call it rural America and maybe we did then too, but mostly I just called it home. I grew up reading the two local papers, The Finger Lakes Times and the Democrat & Chronicle. I remember being so excited to see my friends’ names in the paper when they published sports highlights or reviews of our high school play or the names of the Student of the Week. We cut those out and hung them on our refrigerator doors. Local news gave us local context which helped us understand more about the things that impacted our daily lives. And local rural (country?) communities continue to need that context, especially in an election year. Today, Microsoft is teaming up with Institute for Nonprofit News’ Rural News Network to equip local, regional, and statewide newsrooms with additional resources to help them cover the 2024 elections. The RNN network today consists of more than 80 newsrooms across the US, reporting in 47 states, that reach more than 15 million people monthly online. This important resource is working to deliver information to help inform voters about local elections as they head to the polls this November. We’re supporting the national expansion of RNN’s Text RURAL, an SMS-based service that uses AI to send tailored news straight to those living in areas where broadband my not yet be readily available, as well as other efforts to increase access to information in rural communities. I am so proud that we will support the efforts of independent local journalists as they do the crucial work this election season to get people information and resources to cast their ballot. https://lnkd.in/gF87iwp8

As tactics for using non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) to harass and harm victims evolve, so does our approach to protecting our services and users from this harm. Today, as part of our comprehensive approach to protecting victims including advocating for modernized laws, we’re announcing Microsoft’s new partnership with StopNCII to pilot a victim-centered approach for detecting and preventing NCII in our Bing search engine.? We’re also actively speaking with victims, experts and stakeholders to understand their perspectives on how to address this issue effectively. By working with StopNCII and other partners, our Digital Safety Unit is exploring new ways to proactively keep everyone, especially women and children, safe from online harm.?
