Honoring the Women Who Fought for Justice ????????? ? In 1977, women incarcerated at the Detroit House of Confinement took a stand. They filed a class action lawsuit—Glover v. Johnson—demanding equal access to services, education, and fair wages. Their fight for gender equality in prison lasted well into the 1990s, marking a historic step toward justice. ? Their courage paved the way for change, but the fight isn’t over. In 2019 incarcerated women in Michigan sued for unsafe living conditions. Just this week, a judge recommended that the case be heard and criticized the grievance process that prevents women from being able to speak up about the dire conditions they face. ? This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor the legacy of the women who were part of the Glover v. Johnson case and support all women who continue the fight for justice. ? #JusticeForAll #WHM #GlovervJohnson #MichiganJusticeFund #MJF

Today, on #NationalPublicDefendersDay, #MJF honors and celebrates the incredible public defenders who are tirelessly providing critical services to system-impacted communities and upholding everyone’s constitutional right to counsel. In 2022, MJF hosted a convening of public defenders to build community, lay the foundation for building a collective voice and power, and connect defenders with families, system-impacted individuals, organizers, and policy advocates. It was a chance to unite those shaping the criminal legal system and collaborate for meaningful change. A core working group of public defenders and criminal legal reform leaders came together throughout 2023, and while the project was paused for a short period, we relaunched the working group it in 2024! A huge thank you to our public defender partners! We are deeply grateful for all you do! #PublicDefendersDay #PublicDefense #ConstitutionalRights #LegalEquity #AccessToJustice #JusticeForAll #EndMassIncarceration #CriminalLegalReform #SystemicChange #CommunityPower

On this day in history, February 4, 1846: Alabama began leasing incarcerated people for profit, marking the start of a system where private corporations exploited prison labor. After the Civil War, this practice perpetuated systems of slavery and racial capitalism that still persist today. ? In 1972, incarcerated individuals at Jackson Prison in Michigan formed the Prisoner Labor Union (PLU) to resist oppressive working conditions. Though short-lived, the PLU stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for justice and the importance of amplifying system-impacted leaders. ? Let’s honor their legacy and continue to demand equity and freedom for all Michiganders. ?
