Manufacturing USA was created in 2014 to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing by connecting people, ideas, and technology. Manufacturing USA institutes convene business competitors, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to test applications of new technology, create new products, reduce cost and risk, and enable the manufacturing workforce with the skills of the future. The Manufacturing USA network is operated by the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, which is headquartered in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in the Department of Commerce. The office operates in partnership with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Labor.

A number of this year’s Modern Makers cite their backgrounds in sports as helping shape their careers in advanced manufacturing. The core competencies developed in sports often align well with the demands of manufacturing leadership – teamwork, resiliency, goal-setting, decision-making, and more. ?? Baratunde Cola has an incredible story of perseverance on his way to a starting position on the Vanderbilt University football team.? ?? Zachary Kiehl says he hones his business leadership skills by coaching youth sports – it’s not easy to connect with temperamental kids! ???? Matt Robinson competes in long-distance trail running events, which provides him with a lot of perspective about unpredictable journeys. ?? Diana G. says her experience in roller derby makes her a better, more emphatic teammate on the job. Meet Baratunde Cola, the CEO and Founder of Carbice! He's a Modern Maker working on a tiny technology that can make a BIG difference.??? ? Carbice, a member of the PowerAmerica Institute, has manufactured incredibly small carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that can conduct heat super-fast. CNTs are tiny tubes made of carbon atoms. These tubes are incredibly strong and lightweight, and they have amazing physical properties that make them perfect for all kinds of applications. These properties intrigued Bara as he made the transition to graduate studies at Purdue University from undergrad at Vanderbilt University – where he played college football???– and led him to start a company devoted to CNTs after earning his PhD.? ? When not at work, Bara enjoys time with his family, whether outside or at home cooking a meal together. He also coaches softball. "Coaching, in particular, helps sharpen my skills to lead teams and execute." Bara and his team are making a real impact on the world with their innovative work, which helps to create a cleaner future! ?
