Modern Maker Kathie M. Leonard does not have a degree in textiles, chemistry, or engineering, but she successfully built a manufacturing business with expertise in all three areas. Auburn Manufacturing, Inc (AMI), an Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA) member, which Kathie founded in 1979, produces extreme heat- and fire-resistant textile products for the shipbuilding, automotive, aerospace, petroleum, power generation, and metal fabrication industries.? ? When the country saw an increase in inexpensive fabric imports, Kathie led the charge against such practices, which resulted in tariffs on fabric imports and helped protect American manufacturers. ? Kathie’s role in fighting for domestic manufacturing was so impactful that President Biden visited AMI in 2023 and used the occasion to sign the “Invent it Here, Make it Here” Executive Order. The President pointed out Maine lost nearly 45,000 manufacturing jobs between 1990 and 2010 and cited AMI as a success story. ? Today, Kathie enjoys the marketing side of her business and strategizing on how to move AMI forward. All these years later, she still thrives on communicating about how things work. ? Manufacturing USA was created in 2014 to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing by connecting people, ideas, and technology. Manufacturing USA institutes convene business competitors, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to test applications of new technology, create new products, reduce cost and risk, and enable the manufacturing workforce with the skills of the future. The Manufacturing USA network is operated by the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, which is headquartered in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), in the Department of Commerce. The office operates in partnership with the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Labor.

During Manufacturing Month, we are celebrating how some of our Modern Makers took a non-traditional approach into advanced manufacturing and finding their ideal careers. ?? Timothy Kelley's fascination with science fiction led him from a sales career into regenerative manufacturing. ?? Kathie M. Leonard saw an opportunity to help engineers and manufacturers better explain what they do. ?? Oscar Ramirez is on the fast track in his biopharmaceutical manufacturing career and is a great example of how you do not necessarily need a college degree to succeed in the STEM world. ??Michael Gomez has always been fascinated by research, which is not a traditional career path for manufacturing. Learn more about these four Modern Makers' inspiring stories and how they found their ideal careers in advanced manufacturing, and share them with your community: https://lnkd.in/eUBB6_Bk #ModernMakers #AdvancedManufacturing #MFGMonth #MFGUSA #ManufacturingCareers

When his old science teacher suggested he apply for an?apprenticeship at?Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) | BioFabUSA, he jumped at the chance. ? Tim?now helps scientists with experiments using stem cells. He's earned a Biofabrication Technician Certification and a Cell Culture Skills credential from?University of New Hampshire-Manchester.????? ? Tim?believes anyone can get into regenerative manufacturing. Many talented people want to help build careers in this field. He's inspired by the idea that his work could help millions of people get the organs they need. ? On this #MFGDay, we would like to introduce you to Modern Maker?Jennifer Jones, a super smart student and a huge K-pop fan!??????She's earning a PhD in environmental science and policy at?Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and she's passionate about making clean energy accessible to everyone, especially Native American communities. ? During?Jennifer’s frequent visits to help her grandmother in remote Arizona, there was no electricity or running water in their hogan, a traditional Navajo hut. Her family relied on fossil fuels for heating and cooking.?Jennifer felt the impact of these energy burdens and started pursuing studies in environmental and renewable energy to help her community. She's even working with the newest Manufacturing USA institute, Electrified Processes for Industry without Carbon (EPIXC),?to develop cleaner energy technologies. ? When she's not studying or saving the planet,?Jennifer?loves going to K-pop concerts and exploring new cities. She's dreaming of seeing her favorite group, BTS, in South Korea next year!????? ?
