Concluding our Women in the Spotlight series for Women’s History Month, Sarah Marshall had a conversation with Alyssa Gasper, Retail Area Manager. They discussed Alyssa's sources of career inspiration, her approach to professional challenges, and how she empowers women and her colleagues. What inspired you to pursue a career in banking? -SM I was just 21 years old when I started my first role in a bank. At that point, I was not sure what career path I wanted to follow. My mother had been in banking in the past and I knew many strong women that also worked in the industry. After just a short time, there was no doubt that I wanted to make a career out of it. -AG How do you approach challenges and opportunities in the banking industry? -SM I try to look at all challenges with a balanced view of what I am facing. Does this make sense for the customer? Does this make sense for the bank? What risk is associated? What growth opportunities are there? It is very important to fully understand all aspects and take each situation?into consideration. -AG In what ways do you strive to empower and support other women in the field of finance? -SM I am always available for my team and try to consistently coach someone to be the best they can be. I try to lead by example and show that women, no matter their position, have something to contribute and can move up with hard work and perseverance. -AG Can you share a particularly memorable or rewarding experience you've had while working at Mechanics Bank? -SM I love being part of the journey for our customers. I find that watching a business or customer succeed is one of the most rewarding experiences. I have been able to help open a teenager’s first checking account, help him get his first credit card, assist in purchasing his first home, and eventually purchase a business and prosper. That process is just extremely rewarding to be a part of. -AG What advice would you give to young women who are aspiring to succeed in the banking industry? -SM Don’t be afraid to work outside of your swim lane and learn as much as you can. Take on new responsibilities. Ask questions and understand why we have to complete the task vs. just learning how to finish the task. Never settle for mediocre. -AG Mechanics Bank Member FDIC
