Gov. Wes Moore today welcomed hundreds of representatives of small and minority-owned businesses to Baltimore City for the annual Governor’s Minority & Small Business Outreach Summit. The conference brings together small, minority, veteran and women-owned firms, prime contractors and state agencies to network, provide best practices and preview more than $7 billion in public contracting opportunities with the State of Maryland.

The data is in! The speed cushions that we piloted in the City of Hagerstown have been shown to be effective on all performance metrics. We've successfully lowered the prevailing speed with a resultant increase in volumes, improving both safety and mobility for all users. This low cost countermeasure could empower states to address vulnerable road user safety at midblock crosswalks, school zones, unsignalized intersections, or low speed work zones. Very exciting for Vision Zero and Complete Streets.

MDOT's 2024 Climate Implementation Plan was recently submitted in accordance with Governor Moore’s Executive Order 01.01.2024.19, “Leadership by State Government: Implementing Maryland's Climate Pollution Reduction Plan.” This is the 4th in a series of plans developed by MDOT's Office of Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation with collaboration and support from the Modal Administrations. WALKTOBER has wrapped up and we want to give a special thanks to Francine Waters, who helped us organize the monthlong celebration and made WALKTOBER 2024 a success! We also want to congratulate her for being recognized with the Interjurisdictional Coordination Award by the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA MD)?and the Maryland Planning Commissioners Association (MPCA). The award recognizes Francine’s work on MDOT’s Sidewalk Data Collaboration, a project that is overseeing the development of a statewide inventory of pedestrian infrastructure.?By mapping sidewalks, jurisdictions will be able to retrieve data to assist in planning efforts, including the prioritization of pedestrian safety improvements and grant/funding applications.

Last weekend, MDOT attended the Howard County and Downtown Columbia Partnership's 4th annual Cranksgiving event. The Office of Active Transportation & Micromobility displayed Howard County's quick build safety improvements and requested feedback from locals.

We’ve been making our way around Prince George’s County?to refresh and upgrade crosswalk markings. Check out the continental crosswalks at MD 450 and Hillmeade Road in Bowie. Continental crosswalks have thicker striping that runs parallel to the travel lanes, making the crossings more visible – and safer! – to pedestrians and motorists. #MDOTSafety

Pop quiz – do you know what RRFBs are? The answer is... Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons. These devices flash with high frequency when activated at a pedestrian crossing and alert drivers. We recently installed RRFBs at two locations in Middletown in Frederick County. We’re highlighting the new safety features as part of #PedestrianSafetyMonth
