Our SFL courses have brought evidence-based writing instruction to schools across Massachusetts. Hear from Dr. Maria Brisk, SFL course designer, about what SFL means to her: “Teaching the online courses has been a rewarding experience because it has impacted whole schools, their students and teachers. SFL genre pedagogy has taught students how to use language to express their ideas and knowledge not only in ELA but in science, social studies, and math. Writing has become a fun activity. Multilingual learners have been able to apply to any of their languages. Teachers feel stimulated because they have a coherent way to teach writing and their students’ success is gratifying.” Learn more about SFL ?? https://bit.ly/3YHVnOp

From October 24-26, faculty ambassadors gathered at Loyola Marymount University for the fifth convening of the Cura Psychologia Project. Supported by the John Templeton Foundation, this event centered on pressing questions of homelessness and labor in America. Thursday evening featured a powerful lecture by Brian Goldstone titled "THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US: Working and Homeless in America." Friday’s program included a visit to Homeboy Industries, where we toured the facilities, dined at Homegirl Café, and heard from CEO Thomas Vozzo on Homeboy’s mission to uplift formerly gang-involved and incarcerated individuals. Later, we visited the Los Angeles Catholic Worker on Skid Row, witnessing their tireless advocacy, from teaching Shakespeare to the unhoused to providing hot meals and community support. On Saturday, we gathered in reflection, exploring how our diverse disciplines might contribute to understanding and addressing these challenges. Inspired and motivated, we continue this vital dialogue as we look toward our final convening at College of the Holy Cross in May of 2025.

As part of the 4th Cura Psychologia convening at Fordham University,?D. Graham Burnett, Ph.D.?delivered a compelling lecture on?"The Hermeneutics of Attention."?In this critical exploration, Burnett examines the evolving concept of human attention and offers a profound critique of its commodification in contemporary industries—what he terms?"human fracking." This lecture invites a deeper reflection on the ethical implications of attention as a resource and challenges us to consider the impact of its exploitation in modern society.
