Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a debilitating genetic disorder leading to irreversible blindness. There are no viable treatment options for RP patients today. Bionic Vision Technologies (BVT) has developed a revolutionary solution in the form of the Bionic Eye System, the first-ever suprachoroidal visual implant. To date, the company has conducted two clinical trials using first and second-generation systems, involving seven patients. These trials have demonstrated safety and efficacy of the BE system, and positive outcomes in patient mobility, device stability, and durability. The device utilizes cameras mounted on glasses to capture visual information, which is then translated into electrical signals to stimulate retinal cells. These signals facilitate the delivery of visual information to the brain via the optic nerve. The company has been granted FDA Breakthrough Designation for its system and is currently aiming to commercialize a 3rd-generation system.
