When Edgar Maldonado was ushered out of the military on a medical discharge, it was a gut punch. He signed up right after 9/11, did two deployments to Afghanistan, and expected to leave on his own terms. But not now. "I did not know what to do because my sense of purpose was taken away from me," Maldonado told Catalyst. "I put so much emphasis and so much stock into being the person that was the protector, the server. You're taking that away from me. What is my purpose? And I didn't know how to process that." Searching for purpose, he enrolled in college. Then something happened. Maldonado got a second chance to be the protector, the server, by helping vets get back into the civilian job-seeking swing. And that changed his life — again. "Everything changed when I stopped thinking about my needs and started thinking about others' needs," he says. There's much more to his story. Catch it all in this episode of Catalyst!

Many job seekers feel frustrated when they don’t get feedback after being rejected by an employer. But sometimes when we do receive feedback, it can be hard to accept. Rejection is tough, but LinkedIn’s Editor-at-Large for Jobs and Career Development Andrew Seaman encourages job seekers to view feedback as important data for their job search. In this week’s episode of #GetHired, Andrew shares his experiences with rejection with Rebekah Sebastian and Samantha Gattsek. They’re the creators and co-hosts of ‘Thank You for Your Interest,’ a new podcast about stories of professional rejection that helps job seekers to cope with and learn from their experiences with rejection. Here are Andrew’s top three tips for receiving feedback: 1?? Be receptive. Remember that you’re not going to be able to argue your way into a role. 2?? Even if you disagree with the feedback, think of it as data. 3?? Ask yourself what you can do differently next time to change that perception. For more tips on dealing with rejection, check out this week’s episode of #GetHired: ?? Apple: https://lnkd.in/d74XQr-A? ?? Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dkpVfFQP?

Battling back from a career setback is always tough, but when you are literally a battler — a soldier who took the oath after 9/11 and never looked back — getting a diagnosis that means you can no longer serve is in a league of its own. That was Edgar Maldonado's cruel fate, 12 years into a military career, boots on the ground twice in Afghanistan — and never wanting anything else. Many of us might have drifted, maybe so far off course there was no getting back. But Maldonado took the tough road — again — and got himself into college. It was there that another twist of fate allowed him to serve, again, this time supporting other military vets making the same tough transition to civilian life. In this edition of Catalyst, we learn how a man was was trained to face death learned that wrangling disappointment could be as challenging. And how to make it so.?
